Unlock iPhone4S

So I have had a monthly contract with O2 for years - in fact it's out of term now on my 3G.
I have bought a new iPhone 4S on eBay for cash - but it is locked to T-Mobile. I want to move to giffgaff because they are so much better, I am told.
Will T-mobile unlock it for me - they don't even know who I am and I don't have any sort of contract with them?:)

This is what I found under their FAQ

Can I use another network's SIM in my T-Mobile phone?

Yes, you can use another UK or international network's SIM card, but first you'll need a subsidy PIN to unlock your T-Mobile phone so that other SIMs will work in it. If you don't have a subsidy PIN then SIM cards from other networks won't work in your phone.

To get a subsidy PIN, or if you already have one but have entered it incorrectly, please call us on 0845 412 5000. (freephone 0800 9565000)

With regards to GiffGaff, be aware that they currently plan to reduce the amount of data on their £10 goodybag soon, this post on hotukdeals highlights the best sim only plans at the moment on all networks making it easy to compare, hope this info helps.

Depends. T-Mobile will most likely ask for details of the contract before they will unlock it, and if there are any outstanding bills on the phone may refuse. They may also ask for payment for the unlock to be done.

You could try asking the seller to request it be unlocked via T-Mobile, the phone does not have to leave your possesion.

However because of the way Apple lock phones there is no subsidy PIN,T-Mobile will request Apple unlock it, Apple change the flag in their database and the next time you sync in itunes with a different SIM card it should unlock. Beware if you go to a market trader they may be able to unlock it for now but it could be re-locked at any time if Apple reset the phones locked flags, and most likely on any software upgrade to the phone.
