Nokia 5800 or smartphone ?
Hi,
My OH is paying way too much per month on payg with her Nokia 5800 Express Music.
We thought that we should look down the sim only road as she is happy with the phone but the guys in the Tesco mobile shop told her that she needed a different sim card - she thought he said her phone was 2g not 3g but couldn't remember !!!
Must haves -
I am still not sure what sim only cards she needs as it doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere !!
Thanks for your help.

Must haves -
- Keep her current number
- Sat Nav Function
- £10 or less per month
- MP3 Player
- Capable to link up to google calendar
- If it's a new phone it must be free and must be android
I am still not sure what sim only cards she needs as it doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere !!
Thanks for your help.
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

The phone is 3g etc and takes a standard sim ...I'm wondering whether they mean the phone is locked to a network and needs to be unlocked ?
Theres lots of deals out there if the phone is unlockedIt's not just about the money0 -
Hi Silk,
Thanks for your response. Apologies if I sound a bit confused by all this.
My OH went to sign up for a £6.90 sim only deal with 3 in Tesco and they told her it wouldn't work with her phone hence why we are confused !!
So many options out there I feel a bit battered looking.....Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -
You will be able to get the phone unlocked (at a "specialist"), then you will be able to use any network (including Tesco if that's what you want)0

Depends on which network you are on and when you bought the phone whether it was unlocked or not.
Simple way of checking would be to borrow a sim thats on a different network and trying it in your phone to see if it works.
If not it 's not dear to get the phone unlocked if She is happy with the phoneIt's not just about the money0 -
Re. the thread title, the Nokia 5800 is a smartphone, just not a very good one0

Ok, the phone is unlocked currently being used on Orange was formerly my phone that was on Vodafone.
We have found a Wildfire S on Tesco Mobile site at £10 per month with 100 minutes (plenty), 5000 texts and 500mb data and the phone is free.

Seems good to me - what do you think ?Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -
I was in Tesco the other day looking at the phones, would you not be better getting the G300? More phone and it was priced at £60 (they only had white in the store I was in, otherwise I would have got one to replace my Wildfire S).
The Wildfire S is ok, I get decent battery life for a smartphone, I can do what I need to do on a phone (make calls and text), I can access the web if I want, it is much better than the 5800. I'm not constantly on social networking sites. I'm a low user, so battery normally lasts me a week. _ I can't be doing with charging a phone everyday.
Would you not be best getting the payg / contract sorted first, say move to a rolling monthly sim? then worry about handset later.0 -
One possibility, those in Tescos who said the 3 deal wouldn't work were wrong (perhaps they didn't know the phone was locked).
Second possibility, the deal was in some way incompatible (for a Blackberry or something).
I suggest you get a 3 SIM from somewhere on PAYG and try it.
If it works then go back to Tesco with that SIM in and start again !
Unless you want a different phone the 5800 seems to meet your needs. If you buy something else you might want your Nokia SatNav back !0 -

That's not a good deal for two reasons. Firstly you can pick up a Wildfire S at some branches of Tesco for £55.00 (http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/htc-wildfire-s-orange-55-tesco-instore-1323415) without a contract, rather than paying £240.00 over two years. You could then sign up to a cheap sim only deal that gives a similar package.
The other reason is that deals like this exist ( http://www.talkmobile.co.uk/pay-monthly/handsets/tmsmartplan24m750sv.html?awc=2351_1349815273_8fdc3a29e752aa313218f202ef342496) where you can pick up a contract at £7.50/month with a choice of similarly performing entry level smartphones. The deal comes with 250mins, 5000texts and 500mb data.
Might be worth a look to see if your OH would be interested in any of these phones.0
