Combi Boiler Gas Supply Requirements

I have to replace a conventional boiler (which is currently only heating rads as there is an immersion for h/w) and am considering getting a combi. Currently 22mm pipe runs about 15m from the meter to the boiler. 15mm pipe is tee'd off near the boiler to supply a hob. Two installers say, for a combi, that a new supply is needed due to the extra gas requirement of a combi. Two installers are happy to use the existing supply pipe.

New pipework would add considerably to the job and will cause disruption.
Who should I believe? What should I do? Would it make any sense to install a combi and then, if necessary, upgrade pipework? What would be the consequences of insuffient gas supply?

Thanks!

it depends on the output of the new boiler, the more output the more gas you req, the suck it & see approch is wrong, for example new boiler fitted more than 1mb working pressure difference between the meter pressure & the boiler, boiler is now AR (at risk) & gets shut off

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.
  • It would be a Vaillant Eco Tec Pro 24 KH.

Installer tells me he has calculated the pressure loss at 0.6.

depending on the amount of bends he's not far off

  • And is that OK?
  • Probably 4 x 90 degree bends but not sure about number of joints as largely under floorboards.

It's very easy to do the calcs yourself if only to cross check the conflict that you have between the various installers. There is ample info if you google the issue, sorry no link at present.

Sorry Keith not doubting the trade, but if 2 registered installers have opposing view then 1 of them is wrong or being over cautious. I's want to know which.;)

OP as said you need to carefully measure each section of pipe, allow for bends etc and factor in the max gas loading inc fires/cooking and main boiler.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • It is a basic 4 burner hob. Not sure of the model without a visit.
