I have hard shell lockable Samsonite cases that have served me so well over the years.

I also fasten a lockable luggage belt around them and I also secure a cable tie through the case locking mechanism.

OK, not totally relevant in the OPs case but unfortunately, not any use if you are flying to/from the US as if you don't leave all these unlocked they can/will cut them open.

How is it not relevant? If the OP took similar precautions then it is possible her luggage may not have been tampered with and just to add, the TSA do not operate in Asia where the OP commenced her journey!

Of course the TSA can open the case - I am fully aware of that, but what I was trying to suggest, which seems to have bypassed you, is that by making it more difficult to break into your luggage it may just deter a would be thief from picking on your case and pick on an easier option.

I ALWAYS lock my case when travelling from the US - (try claiming insurance if you don't) and in the many trips I have made to the US - my luggage has never been forced open.

I think the "not totally relevant in the OP's case" comment was referring to the statement the poster was about to make (about the US) rather than your original comment not being relevant.
