Need broadband, who to choose ?

Hi Everyone,

I'm currently with virgin media, got basic t.v, line and internet and paying £30 a month.

I only need internet and line, can anyone recommend a new provider.

Talk Talk and plusnet are cheap but evreyones say's they are no good.
I was thinking about sky or B.T as they have got 6 months free at the moment.

Can you guy's pls advice which to choose.
p.s I only browse internet (no downloads) and in Lancashire.

Thanks Ash

Since you are on a VM cable service, you've got nowhere else to go unless you first install a BT based line, which is required for any ADSL broadband service. VM cable cannot be used with any other provider.
Subject to this, since broadband is exchange specific, do an exchange search on www.samknows.com for your LLU options.
Plusnet Value is a good budget tariff, but is 10GB enough for you?

A common misconception, any internet activity, browsing, watching TV streaming on the iplayer etc downloads data.

e.g a couple of hours watching a TV programme requires about 1gb of data.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Indeed. It's not downloading that is measured. It's data usage, up and down. And any online activity uses data.

It's ok but when you compare with talk talk it's much cheaper.
Then again alot of there reviews are bad.

If i move to sky i will save around £80 then they probably will bump it up to £30 the next year.

I could move to sky, then virgin and keep saving as a new customer,i do this with my car recovery (aa,rac)

Any feedback which company to go with b.t, sky, plusnet, talk talk ?

    Thanks Ash

Check out the retentions thread: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1021885

I called up recently and they offered me 20.90 for broadband 10mbps and phone line on a 12 months contract. I should be able to get further savings if i pay line rental up front for 12 months. £166 down to £120. (£46).

Call up the 'disconnection' team and try talking into a better deal. Use talktalk, sky as leverage.

Have you factored in the cost of a new landline though (up to £130 with BT)?

As said above, get a few figures from the other companies, Sky, Talktalk, then ring Virgin retentions stating you want to leave as you can get equivalent for cheaper from the other companies. They will almost certainly do you a better deal on what you've got now. I've been with VM since they were Cableinet and have done this several times and got a good deal .
