If max is really around £50, then it somewhat limits you with choice anyway. A lot around that price are clones of each other (beware of ones without Google Play). However, Wendy Lou on amazon has a couple for your budget, back in stock on the 22nd Oct

stay away from resistive screens for a start.
Find out what games/apps your son would "play" on it.
Frankly don't expect top notch for £50 and under, and decide if it's really something you son would continue to use, or just get left around because it's not quite right, or the game he really likes doesn't quite work, etc etc.

Some people here find the cheaper ones fine, some don't. If you can raise your budget to more along the lines of the Nexus from google (circa £200 in a walk in store) then basically you are setting up your son with a tablet that will last a reasonable amount into the future, will not disappoint him, and will not end up in a box somewhere because it just doesn't do it. Something he'd be proud of, and would last the test of time.

For decent good value tablets (albeit dearer) see this post here

Very few tablets nowadays have resistive screens.

I'm guessing that the OP, if they could afford to spend £200 on their Sons birthday, they would have asked about tablets under £200.

Bit like wanting to buy a brand new ford focus but being told to buy a BMW M5....

A £50 tablet will end up in the back of a drawer, they start getting decent around £160 for a Nexus 7 machine - before that they will tend to overpromise and disappoint

Have a search on Amazon for 'CloudNine Neuropad Simplicity' for £59. It's meant to be quite good with Skype and Google Apps pre-installed. The only thing that lets it down is the screen quality - but it's still a good deal!

Yup, angry birds and cut the rope will work fine on it. It won't be the quickest tablet in the world, but for games like that and music it will be spot on. Not worth blowing the budget if that is all it will be used for.

Bought one each of the £60 Android tablets for the kids for Christmas. Great little machines that do exactly what they need (games and iPlayer). As they're only 8 they don't need to last for years so at that price they're ideal. It'll give my Samsung Galaxy S2 a rest from Bad Piggies as well! :)

Spot on advice through this thread jaydeeuk1 :T. I think a lot of people recommend products they own but have not actually tried some of these cheaper products. For the purposes that many people need they are perfectly acceptable.
