You can withdraw up to 950 without a lisence or pp anything 1000 or above you need secondary id.
 I withdrew £3600 from Clydesdale Bank with just my card and signature :D

Didn't even ask for my PIN, which they normally would for cash withdrawals but I was closing the account.

I think what james21 meant is that they are not full clearing banks, but are banks

ie can't pay bills on the giro network ect

I know that in halifax the daily limit at the counter is £1200 , but can £300 at machine first so £1500. Any more, need to order, dependent on delivery ect

Halifax bank their cheques, who in turn are sent to Barclays to bank theirs, as they are not a clearing bank, so can't take bills (other than their own)

Does anyone know the daily 'over the counter' limit with Barclays? I have a student additions account if that makes any difference. I'll need to withdraw about £1500 shortly and don't want to take my passport with me unless it's strictly necessary.

I work for Abbey as a cashier part time.

The counter limit for withdrawals is £500 without any extra I.D. needed. (not including £300 at the ATM machine).

If you need more then £500, then:

    1) you need extra I.D. such as a different credit/debit card, passport, driving license etc. and:

    2) You're supposed to give notice in advance. Why? Imagine 100 people walking in together all demanding £1000 and the branch running out of money.

Note: Many bigger Abbey branches will do you more then £500 without advance notice, however this is strictly down to how much 'spare' cash is in the branch and down to discretion.

If you want to guarantee anything over £500 over the counter, just call your branch or the central number and say you want to withdraw xxx amount on xxx day.

Thank you Faz for this invaluable advice. I wondered how we had to go about withdrawing our holiday cash. It is nice to know we can order what we need over the phone as the nearest Abbey branch is not exactly on our doorstep. One amendment I would make is that our local branch insisted on £200 limit but we were able to withdraw £1,600+ in a little over 24hours recently by pleading with them that it was for a life-or-death bill-paying situation - they insist on 48 hours normally

Natwest you can pretty much draw over counter how ever much you need but over certain limits you need ID and extra checks are done etc etc and over bigger limits you need 24 hours notice. But why anyone would need huge amounts of cash I don't know?? You could always use other methods ie bankers draft or card payments.

My local Abbey (in central London) has allowed me to withdraw 6000 without notice before (but only because there was lots in the tills that day) - and they'll do any amount with 24 hours notice. Think it's probably based on the size of the branch.

To willo: Moving cash around between banks means you don't have the 3 days BACS lag, as Abbey aren't on the FP system - just a price you have to pay to get a decent rate on the balance!

Up to 20k without 24 hours notice at Natwest.

To correct some misinformation, Abbey is a full bank (just like the Halifax) and has been for many years. The only large building society left is Nationwide.

Yeah, I'll just pop in and pay my bank giro credi--

    Oh, nevermind...
