Winnington International

I'm just wondering if anyone can shed a little light on the abovementioned company. I had a lovely phonecall from them this afternoon when I was on my way back from the school run, pleasant enough chap, although I'm a bit concerned about the following;

They were trying to flog me 'below market value' properties in Turkey. I've since spoken to a friend who is a Turkish national, and this is expensive for the area, and about right for the tourist areas.

Returns of approx. 10%, which can easily be doubled by going it alone. Mortgage interest is around 12% in itself, leading to a loss from day one

The bloke I spoke to could tell me I own a Ford S-Max (I used to) and a Lexus SC430 (I also used to). I was told I have a 'very nice house' and that it was worth the £617k I paid for it (very precise number there, which is actually correct)

He's then tried to plod me regarding my international holdings; knowing that I own companies in Georgia, Russia, Armenia, Spain, Italy and the UK. I refused quite bluntly to mention what comes in/out of the accounts, and apart from the main company (which he already knew about), refused to tell him what any of the companies do. He got rather aggressive.

I think he's seen the house from the outside on Street View (as the camera came past with both cars on the drive), but I'm not 100%.

Any other ideas?

All that data can be obtained from Streetview - check if those cars are on the drive and also house prices are available online.

If a company is targetting with cold calls and that type of data I would not touch them with a bargepole.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

I'd have asked them for some contact details and then said that if they ever called again you'd engage some Russians and Armenians to go and have a friendly chat wherein they would explain some of the fundamentals of business etiquette and offer some incentives to ensure it was observed in the future.

Oh, and congratulations by the way: you now have a stalker.

    Worth reporting to plod?
I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.

I thought it seemed a little strange, although at the same time, they seemed perfectly happy for my accountant to have a look over (which she will be). I'm sure she'll pick it up and expose something dodgy.

There's a huge difference between 'target income' and 'guaranteed income'. We've struggled to hit 'target' income on nearly all our BTL's for the last 3 years.

Hmmmmmmm, there's a large Russian bloke down at the bar we drink who would sort them out if any of us lost money.

As abovementioned, I'm going to let my accountant look over and deal with accordingly. She's stated she'll do this FOC for us.

I've often found that free things can end up costing a surprising amount of money.

So you received a call from a company you know nothing about which uses dubious practices this afternoon and your accountant within 7 hours is scheduled to have a look at it???? Look at what exactly???

Go on tell me this is a wind up and restore my faith in the human race :D

There's a good chance it'll be reported to police. If she can deal with the aftermath of it, it leaves me free to run a company.

I've got an accountant on tap, which is surprisingly useful.

Well, either you want to report it to the police or not. I am really surprised that someone of your alleged business accumen would post on MSE about an issue that might need reporting to the Police

If who can deal with the aftermath of what?

I think I am truly lost now - how would an accountant replace the Police?

Problem: Dodgy 'phone call from peeps who know a lot about me.
Solution: Assign my accountant the job but put management consultants, graphics designers, and public relations executives on standby, and then put the feelers out for people who can help with the social media side of things.

    Pffff

I still reckon it's a job for the Armenians: they'd have lots of fun.

I'm just staggered that you let him get past the 'Hello' stage of his attempted scam.

I never get to find out what any of these people might have dug up about me because I hang up immediately and move on. Life's just way too short for that kind of stuff.
