When you say layers you mean coats. I assume as you had ceiling re plastered he will do mist coat that is coat of paint watered down. That will dry in minutes on new plaster

    Bloody big kitchen then.

    Cheers

Exactly, it must be enormous. I did my lounge ceiling (1 coat) in about 1 hour, 5m by 3.5m.

To be honest, it is an outrageous statement to say that something might go missing. Anyone could steal anything in your house, whether you are there or not. My husband was a decorator for many a year and if he ever got a sniff of anyone distrusting him, he would have told them go get someone else.
A professional will not steal from you. If you employ a flybynighter, I could understand your concerns, but you insult every trustworthy professional by your comments.

What I would say in Capital Letters is IF YOU DONT TRUST THEM, DONT EMPLOY THEM.

He is ripping you off anyway, 3 coats indeed, never in a million years, get him to do 2 coats in the morning, pay him for at the most 3 hours work and say thank you very much, dont come back. He is expecting you to actually pay for the time he is doing nothing while waiting for the paint to dry, :rotfl:

My late mother had carers visit to help her go to bed. Several objects went missing including some expensive binoculars (£200) I gave her as a present. The fact that someone is a professional means merely that they are paid. Most are honest. A small number aren't.

Make sure anything small and valuable is hidden.

Well if something did go missing, it wouldn't take Sherlock Holmes to work out who the culprit was. If you don't trust this person, you shouldn't be employing him.

I think you should be more worried about him leaving the house with all the windows open. I think it would be best to postpone it until you can be there all day.

Edit: just noticed that this thread was started yesterday so too late.
