Trolling?

Options
Just thought i'd throw the question out there...

What's the forum's stance on trolling, and where do you draw the line between giving someone a hint that they've asked a bit of a daft question, and people full-on demeaning the OP with no real regard to the relevancy of the question?

The reason I ask is that of my last 3 or 4 posts, all asking very legitimate questions, all seem to have been greeted with some sort of 'troll' answer, and feels like whatever I say i've got someone sticking the proverbials up at me.

Is it some sort of in-built prejudice against anyone who is a certain 'rank' on the board? (ie. 'Moneysaving Convert') because i've been a member for many years, but never really had cause to use the board because I've generally had everything under control.

I seriously feel like leaving the site for good right now!

  • There are 1,115,945 members on MSE - there's bound to be a few eejits out there. Everyone experiences them at some stage. Just ignore them (you can put people on an ignore list - click on their name and the last option on the list is 'add xxx to your ignore list), or report the post and the moderators will take a look and remove it if necessary.

    Did you read this sticky?:-

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING: Money Saving Expert / CAB pilot service

    Which says:-

Citizens Advice has several bureau advisers on this board, based around England & Wales, initially answering questions on four different topics:

    · dealing with debts and debt disputes – see thread
    · housing benefit – see thread
    · tax credits & benefits for people in work or looking for work – see thread
    · your basic rights at work and redundancy problems – see thread

You’ll recognise a CAB adviser as their username will be displayed in bold purple, eg CAB Birmingham representative, and have a special representative signature.

If you have a question about other topics or issues, please see if the Citizens Advice self-help website has the information you need Adviceguide. If you need more help, please contact your local bureau. You can get their details from the CAB directory. Comments on CAB services are always welcome, so please let it know what you think using its Feedback form.

This forum should be a place you go to after you've trawled the internet for answers.

Some of the questions you've asked are, frankly, strange. The answers are fairly self evident and also, I suspect it's got something to do with where you've posted the questions.

The car windscreen one should have been thought through before you posted at all, let alone on the CAB Board.

We have a Motoring, Cycling and Public Transport board for that.

The answer's you, btw. After you've got a crime number from the Police, your insurance deals with it.

Office Temperature? After you've gone through the direct.gov site for H&S, that should have been for the Employment Job Seeking and Training board.

The answers you got for the Lazy Landlord thread were fairly useful, but you shot yourself in the foot admitting you've been texting the landlord.

FTLOG, who texts their landlord? Everything must be in writing and go through the agent (if there is one).

Your girlfriend's volunteering? Good for her, but why? What prevents her from applying for work in her chosen field?

    And so on.

People who ask daft or irrelevent questions (or irrelevent to the thread they're posted on) tend to get quite short shrift.
 Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway...
  • Thanks for the input on that.

I guess because of the nature of my posts i'm never really sure where the best place to put them is, so you're right - I suppose i'm getting the wrong audience.

Is there a simple way to identify which forum it's meant to be in? seems a daft question but i'm thick sometimes.

Oh, and the landlord - he's just proved himself as being lazy, by saying verbally he just couldn't be bothered to pick up the dishwasher, and he's just told me face to face he's not going to bother paying the tv license. Not that i'm really bothered now, since everything is working fine now.

As a start read the stickies in the thread you 'think' you should post in. For example did you read this one in the CAB board?:-

PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING: Money Saving Expert / CAB pilot service.

In many instances the info. you need is on the forum if you look.

Its just a case of look at the sub forums and pick what you think is the most suitable area to start a thread in.

Sorry to hear this. I have some sharp and frankly quite nasty replies on these boards from several posters... I said one thing - when I first came on - that a few people disagreed with, and because I won't back own on my views, a couple of people have decided they hate me, and they keep on following me about saying something negative about EVERYthing I say on EVERY thread.

But I actually don't care; I just find it funny. :) I've been through so much crap and stress and hard times this past 10 years, that I couldn't give a fig what some nobody on a message forum (who I am never going to meet) thinks of me. As I said, I get people posting on threads (after I have posted,) who are posting PURELY to attack me and my posts - or they just repeat what they said earlier in the thread as an excuse to post again and take a swipe at me in the process.

I think one in particular checks my profile to see my last post, and what thread I was on, so they can go and comment on it and have a go at me at the same time. :rotfl:'Trolling' is traditionally someone making up new usernames to support their regular usernames posts, or making up new usernames just to attack people, but I think it carries other guises... like following someone around purely to have a go at everything they say... and it's also called bullying.

Don't take any notice of the nasty trollish remarks... just respond to the sensible and helpful replies. Most people are nice. :)

Agree with a lot of the replies you have received here, remember it is easy to hide behind a keyboard. Also remember just because people do not agree with you does not make them a troll. I lurk a lot on here and only contribute occasionally, however I have seen a lot of posters come on to the boards who think they know everything, and as a result tend to label genuine posters as trolls. I have seen a lot of posters disappear from the boards, due to the likes of these people who tend to think they are always right and have a self righteous attitude, people who have thousands of posts and have helped numerous people in the past, they cannot be bothered with the aggro some of these posters are intent on bringing to the forum. A lot of the trolls will try to deflect attention away from themselves and blame the other posters, but it is fairly clear who the actual troll is if you can read between the lines. Try not to rise to a troll if they are baiting you but just report their posts, although with my experience this does not always receive the action worthy of it by the MSE team, and sometimes the trolls can even deceive the MSE team and you will have your posts/threads removed if you respond to the baiting. Good luck and hope you avoid any trolls in the future, but I would not hold your breath:)
  • What's the forum's stance on trolling, ..
It appears to me that they are most accomodating of all posters on this website
