Fairness when sharing same landline

I really hope someone can help me. I have trawled the internet and have not got very far.

We want to install a landline in a shared house. Sharing the line rental is the easy part. However, we don't want to end up paying for each others' phone calls.

Does anyone know if we can create a system where the user can be identitied so they pay for their particular calls? I was thinking of a security number for each of us or something similar.

In a shared house I saw a BT Call Meter.

The users noted their name, call meter value at beginning & end of call in a notebook.

This was a good few years ago (mid 1990's) when there were only standard call rates, so I don't know if they do anymore & whether it works with complexity of call rates you get nowadays.

Ps: found this on internet, which is what I saw:

With itemised bills, a call meter is a waste of time anyway. You could just write down who made the call and what number it was to, and the bill would give you the cost.

You do some leg work, make some phone calls.
Phoning BT/Virgin Media etc. sounds a good 1st step, what do you think !!??

True, but you could talking about 100's of phonecalls.
Also, others may not want you knowing numbers they are ringing. ;)

Why don't you sign up to BT.COM When you log in you can go to recent calls and there check the numbers you have called. Should be easy enough to work out who's calls are who's !!!! or is it??
