I'm looking for a newer car to replace a mk2 golf (1992) which is getting on a bit, and with fuel prices so high I want something a bit cheaper to fill up, and insure, but still reliable.
I was thinking of a polo, which is a more modern shape, and has smaller engines. The newer golf's are bigger and heavier and I don't often have many passengers with me.
Does anyone own one of these and would you recommend one? I am looking between £500-1500 depending on the age.

thanks bengal, I always thought the ibiza was like a golf not a polo, it looks more like that size. Maybe I am getting mixed up with the leon?0

That's correct, the Leon uses the Golf platform while the Ibiza and the Cordoba use the Polo platform (all the VW versions obviously). Strangely the Fabia mk 1 was given the new Polo platform a couple of years before the Polo.

cheers! noticed a couple of ibiza's just over the grand mark, several years newer than the polos at the same price. they actually look more modern too.0

Personally i would keep the Golf. As long as there are no signs of rust.
Its cheap to fix. Not bristling with electronics just waiting to empty your wallet.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
cool so i'm lookin for an ibiza or polo, usually look at ebay and autotrader, does this cover it or are there any other sites worth checking out? i don't really want to travel far to find a car, ideally within 20 miles.0

so
how i hate sentences starting soo too:D
you dont want to travel more than 20 miles
you have between 500 and 15oo to spend and youve nailed it down to a problematic ibiza or a worn out old polo
why~?0 -
As with SB, don't get why you want to spend £1500 to potentially save £300 a year dep on insurance, on a car that might be more unreliable?0
-
i could spend up to 1500, under 1000 would be preferable. if an ibiza is problematic and a polo worn out then what would you suggest? i thought this vw/audi was a reliable brand, compared with fiat/ford/renault etc0

I have a 2001 polo and love it. Only got rid of my 1996 polo because some drunk wally wrote it off (not me by the way:)) I would highly recommend them, don't know much about ibizas so can't comment on them.0
