Get the kids a bar of choccy and a lottery ticket. Or just one or the other if the budget is tight! It's what my nan does as she's not got a huge disposable income, and we all appreciate the thought. Chocolate gets "used" far more than the random nicknacks my aunt buys us all, and although a losing lottery ticket isn't that useful, the thought counts. Or scratchcards may provide smaller but higher chances of a prize?
  • erm.. am not into the lottery (or any forms of gambling), sorry. One year, I made HM jams and chutney when I got into this preserving craze and made them for the whole family. I didn't really gain any appreciation on that as they're the sort who likes expensive shop-bought gifts (I later discover this when I open their cupboards, 2 years later).

I'm afraid I'm just not cut-out for conventional 'normal' activities/behaviours when it comes to family gatherings as that was how I was brought up, but since becoming an independent from them at the age of 18, I've gone into a more alternative lifestyle which is against excessive consumerism/labels/keeping up with the Joneses mindset.

i've also got to endure sitting with my parents' on the Eve and the 27th on my own. That'll be fun with the TV blasting away.

I know.. I'm having a good ole moan on here, and it isn't good to have this viewpoint about the family. I will try and make the best of the situation and try and not think of the negatives when the family gathers together.

Ok, I'm confused. Do you want to go or not?
If as you say, you have been independent from your family since the age of 18, you enjoy spending christmas alone and you have spent christmas days alone in the past then why don't you just say no.
You can't be forced 'to endure' anything. I have spent christmas day alone many times. I have also spent the day with people who didn't want to be there but for some reason feel obligated to do so and TBH I wished they had stayed away. OH has an aunt like this. She would spend the day with a face like a slapped backside, pretending to have a good time but slowly and subconsciously sucking the spirit out of everyone else. No offence but it's was just too draining and eventually we stopped inviting her.

I will be spending this Christmas with my husband but as he's Muslim, Christmas Day is just another day for him.

I treat Christmas Day as every other day aswell, but may go to a church service, then back home to cook roast lamb(which we never have as to expensive), then I'll relax for the rest of the day watching rubbish tv and funny dvd's until bed, while the oh is probably on his laptop.

I don't have children so probably when I do, I will see Christmas in a new light, but for now it is just another day off work.
  • there will be moments when i feel glad that the family is altogether but in the main, it'll do my head in a bit too many times. so, yes i do want to go but there are too many downsides tho..

i'm generally a confused person (full of contradictions etc)

I just found out i'm gonna be completely by myself too, lol.

Some family are going on holiday, and others are spending it at other family members houses, so i'm gonna be by myself, without a car, in a 7 bedroom house out in the middle of nowhere! lol.

    Quite funny for me, personally.
    I don't particularly care, I must admit.

I'm just gonna watch movies, eat chocolates, and just relax.
Might go out for beers round someones house in the evening if i can be bothered, but i'm not overly fussed.
Just a day off of work sounds nice to me!
