Anglian water first bill

Hello everyone! Just a quick question: we're moving into our new home and I have set up our account (metered) with Anglian Water.

We're 2 adults, no children. We have a garden but there is a water butt to use for watering. We take one shower each a day (almost never any bath) and I usually do 2 loads of laundry a week.

The guy on the phone said our initial DD would be £36 per month, based on 2 adult sharing a property.

I will take our meter readings every month and forward them to them. But in the mean time, it seems rather excessive to me (new to Anglian Water). Is it in line with Anglian Water's usual prices? Or are they just being careful? If Anglian Water customers could share their thoughts with me, I'd be very grateful as I would like to amend our yearly budget.

Thank you :)

It should be easy to compare Anglian Water's prices with those of your previous supplier - the figures are readily available.

If your new home is similar in every way to your previous home, then your bills should also be similar - did you discuss this with the guy on the phone?

That's the thing, we pay £26 with Severn Trent (again, metered).

I told him that we were paying £26 in the SW but he just told me to call them back in a month with a new water reading...

Is Anglian Water that much more expensive? If it is then the budget will have to be amended. I just foolishly assumed that water companies had more or less the same tariffs.

Hopefully, they're just taking precaution, a bit like gas and electricity companies in the first few months.

Thanks for your message Man Overboard :)

Anglian Water know as little about you as you know about them!

A direct debit payment is not a bill, it is a payment 'on account', and will be adjusted as time goes by - if you genuinely cannot afford the extra £10 a month, then cancel the direct debit arrangement, put £26 a month into a jamjar, and wait for your bill

We can afford the £36 but the £10 could be put to better use rather than stay as credit on ur account :D

I will call them in a month time and see if our readings warrant a lower DD. Or failing that, you're right, we could just wait for proper bills... I had not thought of this...

    Thanks :)

Hi Ellie, we are also with Anglian Water and are 2 "senior" people!
Our DD is £33 per month and seems to be accurate to cover our bills.
The accepted average usage per year is 55 cubic metres per person. We are using about 97 cu m per year so I guess Anglian are basing your DD on the average 110 cu m.

When you have a few meter readings you will have a chance to assess your usage, I don't think your usage varies much day by day (unless you go away) so even one normal day's readings will help, if you do this then you will have to read all of the dials including the very minor ones eg 1/10 of a litre.

Thank you so much notbritishgas :) That definitely put things into perspective :)

My husband decided not to pay by DD and to put the £35 aside until we receive our first bill. :)

(Now to brace ourselves with enormous DD right before winter for elec and gas :D Thank God for this website: I think we're going to fix.)
