I've usually received notification of anything waiting to be delivered, including SD (I did panic when I ordered my Olympic tickets that I wouldn't get any notification but in fact they emailed people to say they had been delivered). Also, I go in and out of the post office frequently when selling, and it's in the corner shop where I go to buy lunch when I'm at home - so the proprietor would probably tell me if there was anything waiting for me. I also used to work for him.

In some circumstances I'd say check SO/DO etc. and I know notifications don't always appear, but in my own case I don't need to worry about things like this.

There might be if it's been sent as a letter but is in fact a large letter. It could well be at the sorting office waiting for the excess postage to be paid. A card should have been left by the postman but sometimes they are not left or get thrown away with junk mail.

    this was my thinking
When i see an item will fit in an envelope, its often the culprit for underpayment
charged items take longer to hit the DOs as they are pulled and manually handled through the mail system
easily add 4+ days to travel time

There seems to be a lot of this about at the moment - I'm waiting for an amazon item from the 27th, someone else I know is waiting for something off ebay from the 28th, neither one of us have had lost/late post before! Strange coincidence it happened at the same time.

2nd Class is appallingly slow and is a lot slower than it used to be.

Royal Mail do this deliberately now, to discourage use of 2nd Class and to maximise their profits by driving people towards 1st Class.

are you missing the point of 2nd class?
The fact its second class means that if workload dictates, then it will lose out to 1st class in sorting priority.
I keep saying it,staffing levels are cut year on year.
so there will be periods where sorting will be prioritised.
I know that delivery offices are already running 'diversion' sorting nightshifts to do mail centre work.
This is in September before its even starts to get busy with the build to xmas.

i bought an item on the 27th of october. seller apparently sent on the 28th.

she sent it 2nd class post, only a small item that will fit in a small envelope.

i've still not received it and its been over a week now...

contacted her and she told me 'it was dispatched on 28th by 2nd class delivery which can take 2-5 working days, sometimes more, sometimes less'.

she told me to contact her on monday if the item still hasent arrived.

would you just wait until monday?

Today is 6 October...do you mean September?
Sorry yeah I mean October (I'm stuck in September for some reason!)

The item really isnt going to weigh much, it would be about the weight of a birthday card, if that.

Ok, shall see if it comes tomorrow and then contact my delivery office. Thanks :)

It looks like you are stuck in October, not September :) The item was posted 27th Sept by 2nd class which usually takes 2 - 3 working days, sometimes next day with 1st class delivery.

If you have not already, it may be worth checking the sellers feedback and where they are registered to make sure the item is actually in the UK.

I bought an item on eBay on 27th Sept, dispatched 28th Sept and it still has not arrived despite receiving other 2nd class mail sent after this date. I looked through the sellers feedback to find that he is actually registered in Tawain and this is where his items are being sent from, not UK as stated in the photo and listing - very misleading!

I contacted the seller to confirm it was posted the date it was marked as dispatched and asked why it appears these items were coming from Tawain not UK as stated in the listing. He confirmed the item was located in Tawain due to UK warehouse being out of stock - unbelievable! so I suggested he updated his listing to show this rather than mislead his buyers and receive negative feedback. Hopefully my item will arrive tomorrow, if not I will open a case as I am not prepared to wait any longer for a replacement being sent from another country.

That's a good point. My friend once had to pay extra on a greeting card because a millimetre too fat for standard stamp thanks to the design. I've made the mistake of sending something large letter with a stamp on that was 103g (and accidentally costing the recipient £1.10 in the process. :( ) Easy done.

I must admit I've never not had a card through my door for non deliveries before but since most sellers would reasonably expect me to have made necessary checks, I don't think it hurts to make a call / pay a visit and ask.
FWIW, I know a lot of people don't get asked to sign for RD stuff, but in my experience I always have. If I have not been in, I've always had to go pick it up. Conversely, if it's not a signed for package, postie is happy to leave it either with my neighbour or in my bin cupboard, so for me I would rather people didn't send things Rd since it likely will save me a trip to the sorting office.
"So long and thanks for all the fish" :hello:
  • Well the item is litereally the size of a hair grip in length and is about 2mm deep. really not big enough to be out of a normal packet.

Interesting replies though! Will give it a few days.
