What an informed lot you are :). Thanks so much for all of the links and information- it has really helped.

Lots to digest here, and it seems that I have a been definitely wasting over £300 a year.

I have written to Vodafone, cancelling the contract after it runs out next month and, having read something on one of the links you provided, have also asked for the PAC code (is that right?) in the hope that I can keep the number. If that's not possible, then it won't be a major problem, but I thought it worth a try.

    Thanks again everyone.

Yes! you can keep your number.

For info you need, click these links under "Articles" at

How do I change mobile network?
How do I port my mobile number?
    What is a PAC code?
How do I get my PAC code?

There is also this offer out there, "Giffgaff SIM card with £5 free credit"

I have'nt tried it as yet. Don't know if you have to buy anything to get this £5 free credit. But sounds good on the face of it :)

Your contract doesn't run out, it reaches the end of it's minimum term and then continues until you give 30 day notice, or use your PAC (the latter expires after 30 days if not used). You need to do one or the other, not both. After the 30 days notice period the service will be cancelled and the number lost if you haven't ported it via a PAC.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
