Glazing for my new porch.

We are having a new porch built and its very confusing.

The windows in my house at the moment are Pilkington Cervoglass and are self cleaning with a vague mirror finish, and of course I want the windows in my new porch to match.

I have had a quote for and I quote.

28mm Low E/'k' glass, Energy A rated.
He is a local company and so I asked him if he would price match a quote which was from a company further away which was about £120 cheaper.

He has now come back and said.

'Yes ill match the £1260 but for a better quality window.
The spec has change slightly to ‘C’ rated this is because instead
of heat reflective external pane of glass it would be pilkingtons
active self cleaning.'

The first sentence is tellimg me he is putting in a better quality window for less money???????

Then the spec has changed from A to C.

I'm confused, can anyone explain please.

a rated is better than c rated, and a rated is (generally) more expensive - sounds like he's trying to get away with putting cheaper windows in to increase his margins

Why don't you just ask him to clarify?

For what it's worth, I don't think he's improving by reducing to 'c' rated.

He's simply adjusting so his profit isn't affected.

Thanks both, I'm just waiting for him to call me back.

I'll get him to clarify then.

So for the sake of say £130 would I be better going for the A rated do you think

  • i would ask is it going to be worth the extra cost ? what i mean is unless you are going to have a rad in there then the heat loss really doesn't matter as you won't have any in there to start with, yes some heat will transfer through your existing front door but if it's enough to heat the porch then you are losing far too much through the door so i would replace that, of course if it is going to be heated then go for the best windows you can
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

as said, unless it's heated there is no point in paying for more expensive windows - what you should do is go and get quotes for c rated windows (rather than a rated which they are reducing to c to increase margins)

No, there wont he heat in there so your points are quite valid.
    Thanks both.

The annoying part is when he came to do the quote I actually asked him for Pilkingtons Activ.

He came up with different windows, bigger price, then when I asked him to price match, only then did he come up with the Activ.
    Grr, why dont people listen.

What also confused the issue is that he said.

'Yes ill match the £1260 but for a better quality window.

which sounded like he was putting in a better quality window for less money?????
The original quote was for £1380 or so. Do you see what I mean.

    because instead
of heat reflective external pane of glass it would be pilkingtons
    active self cleaning.'
