Anyone Else Been Harassed By HSBC Over Mortgage?

Hi everyone, newbie here so plz be gentle with me! :D

Back in July me & my hubby found a house that's perfect for us to buy, as we are FTBs. We put in an offer 2 days after viwing, which was accepted. We then went to HSBC to see about a mortgage.
For 3 long weeks we were basically pratted around & still didn't get an answer as to weather we'd be suitable for a FTBs mortgage. We both have no loans, no CCs or any debts whatsoever, have a £14k deposit, good credit rating etc. Yet they were dragging their heels.
Unfortunatly, after a while we got fed up of waiting & said something had cropped up & decided not to pursue it any further & thanked them for their time & help, with grace & courtesy.
Bit of a white lie there though I'm afraid, ooops! I know that's not a very good thing to do, but we had enquired at another lender instead, & were accepted for the mortgage within 2 days. :D:D Very quick indeed! Anyway, long story short, we got an even much better deal with the new lender & we are close to exchanging pretty soon.

The problem I'm having now, & for the last 9 weeks or so, is HSBC are ringing me constantly about taking up the mortgage offer, even though we told them we didn't want to pursue it. In one week I counted 16 times.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
It's now got to a point I have had to divert the certain numbers they are calling from, to my voicemail all the time.
I know we probably wasted their time by going through things & then deciding not to go with them due to them faffing around, but can they harass us like this? Has anyone else had any similar experiences with HSBC?
Many thanks taking time to read my post. ;) xx

Have you told them clearly that you now have a mortgage sorted and are no longer seeking one?

For the first few weeks I just said if we change our mind, we will be back in touch with them, and I thought that would be it. Probably my own fault the first few weeks by not being straight! But they kept pursuing us for some reason & I was annoyed that we were being pressured like this.
Then last month I told them straight that we had found another deal & was taking that offer from another lender. He sounded a bit narked & put out but the call ended pleasantly. (which in a way I guess I can't blame him as he was only doing his job to help us at the beginning)
But just over a month on I'm still getting calls from this guy to see if we have changed our mind. Why we would, when I've clearly told him we've now got a mortgage sorted, is bizarre. :( Bearing in mind this all started back end of July.

Ask to speak to a supervisor or manager, take a note of their FULL name and job title, have them remove your telephone number from the computer system whilst you are on the telephone.

  • Answer the next call and say:
"I do not wish to receive further calls. Place my number on your "DO NOT CALL LIST". "If I receive one more call, I will report you to the FSA" (their regulatory body).

Also send a link to your thread here to their customer services dept via email.
  • Thanks for your advice guys, much appreciated. :j I feel bad in a way as we wasted this guys time at the beginning, but we felt we were just being passed from pillar to post with them. They never even gave us a straight answer about if we'd got the mortgage or not, so that's why we went elsewhere.
Yet they decide to bombard us with calls wanting our business, when clearly we don't, and it's a bit late now anyway. It's stressful buying a house, & being harassed just adds to it! :(

Perhaps you have had a lucky escape. i have read several mortgage grumbles on here about HSBC because they apparently insist on clients using solicitors/conveyancers from an approved list

So glad we didn't go down that route then......:T I don't think I would recommend them to anyone tbh, not after our experience with them.
We ended up with a totally different & more better offer and deal at N----ST. Should have saved a lot of time by going to them in the first place.

I think you've been too nice. You need to be firm, and tell them clearly that you do not wish to take up the offer, nor do you wish to be rung again. If you've said about perhaps getting back in touch (which I realise is you being nice) then that's what they've heard. They now need to hear 'NO' and not be in any doubt that this is so.

If it were me, I'd also tell them that the reason they lost the business is because they took so long in the first place, but you may not want to do that.

    They don't do this anymore.
My mortgage is with them and I must admit their organisation was terrible and I had to go back a few times when they didn't ask for certain information/recheck things- which wound me up royally.
Now I am with them I am happy as I have a competitive rate.
They are a picky lender and take a long time to assess people for mortgages, worth sticking it out if its a deal you want.
Glad you found a better deal elsewhere OP!
