My OH rides a 20 mile round trip every day on a £300 bike. Only thing I will say is invest in some real good tyres. We have bought schwalbe marathon pluses it cost £50 for the set but we have gone from punctures every other day to no punctures at all for the last 6mths and touch wood we won't get any in the future :)

  • Have a look at one of these. Not a bad starter bike and a bargain at £247

Or check ebay for local bikes. Mountain bikes with road tyres pumped up to 60psi are flying machines for commuting.

Do you actually plan to do any mountain biking, or just canal paths etc?

I have a GT avalanche 1.0 and it's an excellent bike, Chris Broadman range at halfords are excellent and get great reviews too, the quality of componants on them are some of the best around, check out to see if your work does a bike scheme as for around £300 you could buy a bike costing around £500.

For the type of riding you say you do, you really do not want a hybrid bike, my GT can be used on the road just as well as off road, all I do for the road is change the tyres to slicks, it is then better than a road bike as it can dump up and down curbs with no worries, and I also prefer the riding position more on a MB than a road or hybrid bike, it really is worth paying a bit more to get the right bike now, as you can upgrade parts later but on a bad frame it would be pointless doing that.

also check out last years models from places like wiggle and evans as you get quite a bit off and the bike is just as good and sometimes even better than this years model.
