Mountain Bike

My friend has just bought that bike on offer and loves it.
I would go to a proper bike shop where they are trained to fit the bikes for height and reach and offer test drives. Try some out for size, weight and feel, I tried 11 bikes before I found mine. Hybrid tyres will be better if you do a lot of road cycling, as fat tyres are harder work and I think mountain bike tyres are really for rough terrain. Don't be seduced into paying more but once you have got the feel of the bike then you can go to halfords and try that bike.
Although in our area halfords can not answer questions, will not allow you to ride them outside and didn't even know that the seat slid back and forth for reach. The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. Steve Biko0 -
I bought a Kona Lana'l mountain bike about 8 years ago. This is a base level mountain bike. I paid £300 for it. I have used it on and off road and to commute to and from the train station. It's still in really good condition and I am really, really happy with it. I had a look on the Internet and you can get a 2012 model for £300.
Here is the google shopping0 -
Don't go to Halfords.....just don't! Spend £300 on ebay should get a semi decent mountain bike then put slicks on it (£7.99 at Decathlon) and you will be fine.0

A Specialized Hardrock would be where i'd spend my £280, the rest on accessories.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Thats a crazy generalisation, some stores are bad some stores are good, but that doesnt make a difference to the product, the Carrerra range is good and if bought at the right time can be a bargain0 -
I wouldn't go for Halfords either, over-inflated prices for sluggish, uncomfortable, heavy bikes.
Check out Evans Cycles website, should give you some idea of what you can get for your cash.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Boardman comp is a good bike and halfords stock it, sometimes on offer, so you can get a good bike/deal at halfords0

Halfords are the only retailer who sells Boardman bikes, widely regarded as some of the best budget bikes available. So comments about ignoring Halfords are rather short sighted.
Personally, I'd go to Decathlon. I've had several bikes from there and they've been absolutely fantastic. For the spec levels of their bikes they generally cost 30/40% less than the branded bikes such as Specialized and Trek.0 -
Wiggle have a 2012 gt avalanche 1 disc for £480, these retail at £800 - £900.
