Slow Starting and Shutting down

I have a laptop with XP Home and when starting, the backdrop comes on and the taskbar and four icons. There is then a pause of about three minutes, then the other icons appear. When shutting down, after pressing "turn off" at the bottom,it's about 90 seconds before the turn off button appears in the screen. When pressed, the screen is cleared straight away, but it takes over two minutes for it to shut down.I've done system restore twice, but no difference. All contributions gratefully received!

I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us.0

Drop closed a msg. If he finds the time, he'll get it working optimally. Otherwise, it's a back up and a clean install/factory restore.0

Well yes, but we're assuming you'd back up your data firstDon't you lose data with factory reset?
I'm also assuming that the 'backdrop' is your desktop....
BTW my own XP Home now takes a full two minutes for the choices to appear after clicking Turn Off PC, then a similar time (sometimes longer) to close down, but much less to standby. Factory Restore is way overdue for me!0 -

I followed the advice there, and I've been unchecking one item from the bottom each time I start up, with no joy yet. Today I noticed weird characters had appeared in two of them and I have no idea why....

Sounds like a hell of a lot, or a particular item working a lot in the background. CTRL + ALT + DEL and get to the taskbar - look at what's taking up any CPU/MEM usage before pressing the shut down system button. If you find something(s) taking up a lot of CPU, force a close before shutting down and see if it closes quicker. If you can do without these items, get rid or ensure not running in the background (particularly at statup). My son is now an ‘entrepreneur’.
