Moving to a new home - getting internet access with minimum delay..?

I'm moving to a new home in a months time - for the first time I'm going through the experience of sorting internet access out.

As the title suggests, ideally broadband is up and running with minimal delay. I move in on the Friday, and the broadband is available on the Saturday.

If I'm right, there is no such thing as 'get your router, plug it into the telephone socket and off you go' .. an Engineer, say BT, has to visit your property and do some sort of connection.

What makes things even more difficult is that I work Monday - Friday 9-5, so access becomes a problem.

Are there broadband suppliers who can offer effectively this 'plug and go', or do all require an Engineer to come and make a connection before you are live? If so, any suggestions on providers?

I've checked online and the home location isn't in a cable area so I don't think I can go for the broadband without a phone line option (via Virgin).

Perhaps a stupid question - I'm learning!

The phone line usually has to be active 7 days before the broadband can be ordered with a supplier.

If there is a phone line already then you should just take over the line otherwise it may require a visit.

The broadband activation should not require a visit to your home as it can be done at the exchange. If you wanted you could plug your router in and leave it sitting waiting for the connection and don't forget the filters.

Would you suggest that once I identify my phone / broadband supplier, I call them and place an order to commence on the day I move in?

It's a rented property so suspect the current tenant will have cancelled his phone connection and upon moving in, I wont have a telephone number.

What do you mean about the filters?

    Sorry to sound so clueless!

Hey again brwab. Filters are the smallish plastic white things that the phone wires plug in and out of. If you forget to use them the broadband speed would be terrible.

This prompt connection was another thing I was going to mention in the thread I started. Someone just told me that due to the olympics, phone line engineers still have a massive backlog of work and at the moment it can take 4 weeks to get BT to connect a line at the moment. I'm not sure myself if that refers to new lines or reconnecting existing ones though.

If your line has been disconnected there will be a certain date that it switches on but I don't think anyone needs to get into your house for that. They will probably post you the modem, filters and wires though so that could delay things a little.

I'd just use 3G while you wait.

I just spoke to the chat advisor on talk talk and she said it would be 15 working days in my area. The wait is for the phone line to get reconnected.
