ordered nokia lumia 710; got virgin mobile payg non-microSIM ... ?

Hiya :-)

Just ordered nokia lumia 710 sim free from good seller on amazon. Didn't realise about that it only takes micro sim until after ordering ... really seeking advice, as have surfed google and can see that would need to cut currrent payg sim down to 15mm x 13mm, which would be tricky but is possible. And a lot of people are saying that the cut down sim then works fine in a sim free phone [re occasionally doesn't also], and that virgin mobile refuse to give micro sims to people who haven't bought the phone from them, even if you're a customer.

No idea about the new Nokias etc ... been using a humble old nokia for years ... so I honestly don't know what features I can use on the Lumia 710 that don't involve having a monthly contract. I have broadband only with virgin media, so could I use the Lumia 710 wirelessly to surf and emails etc?

Many thanks, Cat

Possible and not tricky. And you can buy a cheap cutter from ebay if you wish.

I don't see any reasons for this. They may charge for a replacement, but there is no point in refusing.

The only new feature is mobile internet that can be costly on PAYG without a proper bundle. Virgin have good £7/£10/£12 sim-only contracts with a decent amount of mobile data included.

You can, but at home only where a PC is more convenient for this.

Thank you very much indeed; really appreciate advice.
Sorry if I'm misunderstanding, but do you mean if I use the Internet on the lumia, even at home, I'd be using up my phone credit? Or do you mean Internet 'on the move' when out is what would need a bundle?

I bought one for my wife on PAYG but she wasn't interested in it so I started using it myself. It came with a Vodafone micro sim but as it came from CPW it is unlocked. I just cut my existing 3 sim to the same size as the Voda one and it works a treat. So,I would go into any phone shop, tell them you are interested in changing networks and wanted to try one of their micro sims in your new phone to check coverage but use the sim as a guide for cutting your own one. There are also some pictures and dimensions on Google Images.

If you have wifi at home you can connect your mobile to it and use internet without any mobile data bundle. However, what's the point in using it only at home where you have a PC?

Yes, on the move you will use mobile internet and a bundle can be cheaper than a simple PAYG.

Hi and many thanks for confirming about home and outdoor Internet access ... just to clarify [sleepy brain today, lol], if I use the Internet outdoors that comes off my credit? And the lumia has it's own Internet, no need to find a wifi spot?

Yes, either of your credit or of a bundle if you buy it on PAYG. If it's a contract, you'll have some inclusive alloance.

A phone can connect to the Internet either via wifi or via mobile data connection. At some places free wifi hotspots are available. When the phone is connected to wifi it doesn't use mobile data.
