Vodafone endless problems

  • Possible new version of the Vodafone buyback scam? I signed up in April for a contract on a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone, on the understanding that I would get a £5 a month discount if I traded in my old HTC Sensation. I was told a special envelope would be sent very soon, and the discount would apply from the moment the HTC was received.
The weeks passed, and no envelope arrived, despite my prompting. Vodafone customer services said there had been production problems (with an envelope?), but that I would not lose out because of this.
Eventually the envelope arrived on 27 June, with lots of complex instructions about posting options, some of which were quite expensive.
So I posted the phone to MDX, Vodafone's outsourced company, using the standard FREEPOST option on 28.06.13.
One week later I received an 'urgent' email saying the phone had not been received and that unless I sent it within 14 days I would not get the discount. There was however NO method offered for contacting MDX. There was no phone or email address, nor was it possible to reply to the email.
Of course things do get lost in the post (though it is fortunately quite rare). But the model is just a bit too convenient. If MDX received my phone, they have an excellent incentive to say it has not arrived - not only do they get the phone, they don't have to fork out for a £5 a month discount. And there is, for the punter, no means of checking, or even of contacting them.
I am left with the feeling that - for the first time - I can't really trust Vodafone's integrity, which is sad for a customer of ten years' standing.
If you are offered one of these deals DON'T rely on the FREEPOST option, but be prepared to shell out for recorded delivery.

Anything important should be sent Royal Mail Next Day 1PM delivery, its cheaper than Recorded Delivery AND signed for on arrival ;)
