Car Insurance renewal- cert of insurance

Was wondering if any one could give some clarification on this for me, just wanting to know what the actual legal situation is.
Had 3 car multicar policy.
About 3 weeks before renewal rang the insurance company to tell them that we would not be renewing with them.(Son moving in with girlfriend arranging his now with her)
Told them to remove credit card payment details from their system
which they agreed to do.
However, we still received renewal documents together with certs etc.
Rang them again asked why these had been sent out as had already told them not renewing. Double checked to make sure credit card details removed but they were still on the system. They could not answer why it had not been done but assured us they would make sure it was removed.
Have now received letters two weeks later(after renewal date) saying they have cancelled the policy and asking for the certs to be sent back.
The letter states that it is an offence by law not to send them back.
Being as we told them not to renew the policy well before these documents were sent out, are we compelled to return them as they are saying.
Surely the policy is not 'cancelled' as it was not renewed?

Why not just send them back?
They dont want paperwork for cancelled policies floating around in case
they get used for dodgy means.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Then they should take notice and not renew policies when instructed.
They made no mention of sending anything back when I rang them. All that paperwork was binned long ago.
I know I can register them as lost but I was wondering what the official position was.
Fed up with companies doing things like this, I seem to spend half my time these days doing extra things because someone has not done their job properly.
Also today letter from bank they "do not appear" to have a form I signed transferring DDs from another account so could I sign another one. I was told by the branch that it was all done and dusted over week ago.0 -

I never tell insurance companies just on the phone that I'm not renewing I also send them a recorded signed for letter. Unfortunately too many people in those type of companies cannot be bothered to do their jobs properly. If the letter is sent they can try and argue but won't get away with saying they didn't know.
In regards to you destroying the insurance certificate just tell you have done so and don't worry about it.
The police if they stop you actually check with the insurer whether you are insured due to people taking out insurance and then cancelling the policy.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0
