    If you have vital data that it is essential that you don't lose, then you need regular backups:
    • on two or preferably three different types of data medium (hard disk (internal and/or external), USB Flash Drive, CD/DVD, cloud - if you trust it yet)
    • kept in more than one physical location (and that doesn't mean downstairs and upstairs!)
    To return to your original post: why has "the load" on your wife's laptop got too large to bear? Do you mean that the hard disk is filling up? Do you know what's on the disk, and have you pruned what isn't needed? Try TreeSize Free to see what's on it - you can 'drill down' to work through folders, sort in order of folder size, and so on...
