Mice at work dropping on my desk

  • You have my sympathy. I used to work in a historic building that was more like a city of mice. Most people treated the situation as a big joke which used to irritate me no end as I am terrified of mice - people used to find my horrified reaction to mice hysterically funny.

Management took the matter seriously enough to spend a lot on pest control. However, my complaints that I couldn't work on a desk where mice droppings had been found fell on deaf ears. Ultimately I just had to lump it and learn to live with the mice. A tip is that mice tend to come out in the evening so if you don't want a close encounter don't stay in the office too late.

Unfortunately, my experience is that if the mice have really dug in you are probably stuck with them. Trapping and being sensible with food waste will check the population but it won't exterminate it. A mouse population explosion is quite common in October when the nights get chilly and the heating gets turned on.

Whoever said a dead mouse smells like pot noodle - spot on!

Could be worse, when i worked at a well known hospital the old theatres had suspended ceilings and it collapsed with thousands of cockroaches.

We had mice too, people found that food they had left on their desks had bite marks in them - surprise surprise. Get rid of the rood and even if you do have mice they shouldn't have a reason to go wandering about on desks and things. Also, it isn't just the droppings that you need to be concerned about - mice pee as they walk, it is a way of communicating for them.

I don't think anyone has cleaned our desks or keyboards in the whole time I have been where I work (about a year and a half) and you can tell by looking at some of the grotesque grimey, crumb-filled keyboards people have. We do have disinfectant wipes which are supplied to do our own but hardly anyone uses them, so I think mice are probably the least of their problems hygiene wise (I do wipe mine down reguarly though!)

Hopefully you mean rats in the curry houses and not literally rats in the curries.

But perhaps you do mean that.
In Queensway (London) there was a case a few years ago of their being a mouse in the sweet and sour sauce when the Health Inspector was there! The 'chef' pulled it out with his hand and threw it across the kitchen as if it was 'normal':eek:
Yes, they did get a heavy fine and NO I don't eat there.

I reported mice in a place I used to work, when the pest control people arrived it turned out the place had been infested for years, different people mentioned to the pest people they had an issue too! Turned out no individual had wanted to report it because they were scared it was just them and people would think they were dirty.

The whole place needs looking at, & not just a few rooms or the mice will be back!

Unfortunately, one trap is a very inefficient way to get rid of mice infestation - bait boxes are much better. A pest control company would place them in appropriate places where there is evidence of mice - it would be assessed on a week by week basis of how much bait was being consumed by rodents. The poison used is similar to warfarin which thins the blood, and the rodent, once it has consumed enough in proportion to its body weight, suffers internal bleeding and dies.

Mice can narrow their bodies down and get through a hole the width of a pencil, they can climb walls vertically without support and very often climb up through cavity walls and get into loft spaces where they nest. If your employer will not engage a pest contractor, then you may need to phone your local authority environmental health for further advice.

    Hope that helps.

A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Eugh poor OP, I'd be horrified! I think I'd have to buy a massive industrial roll of cling film and wrap my desk up every night before going home, then when I came in the next morning I could whip it off and be confident there was no mouse widdle on my stuff! Obviously I would probably look a bit silly doing it!

ha ha. sorry yes I did mean rats in the curry houses. Not in the curries, I hope not!

but some of the curries, yeah, god knows what was in them. unsurprisingly one of the best curry houses was a veggie one I think called Shalimar!

    :)
