  • If the MOT runs out in January, then a new one cannot be performed until 1 month before the expiry date, i.e. sometime in December.

    Of course it can.

An MOT can be performed at any time.

It just won't last beyond 12 months, from the date of test.

Not true, you can put a vehicle through an MOT test everyday if you wish ;)

The MOT will only tell you that on that day the vehicle passed the test.

When you go to look at the vehicle, take pen & paper ...

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_10020539

look here for details to note ...

then look on the Gov website and it will tell you the vehicles MOT history, any refusals and advisories ...

If you are not familiar with 'cars', take a mechanic with to check the car over, for strange noises and gearbox function.

    Have fun :D

    Thank you for the replies.

We just assumed that the low price was because it has almost 100,000 miles on the clock and an ever so slight misting of the indicator lights.

Apart from that, the car looks in pristine condition. My FIL came with us last Saturday to inspect it and under the bonnet looks fine (in fact, absolutely pristine), brake plates look fine etc which is why we're conflicted (although we do know that just because it looks okay, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is).

The tax disc also runs out in January 2013 so we're thinking that maybe he got it taxed and MOT'd at the same time and it has been sat there for that long (although still unsure why as it's a nice car, but did read that not many people have even heard of Signums so that puts people off). It also has just one former owner.

We've decided to go back and look at it anyway to ask a load of questions but I'm very cautious. I don't drive so ultimately it is my DH's decision (and his parents as his parents are putting some money towards a car for us). I just always have my suspicious head on, hence asking here.

If it's decent, why bring 'sold as seen' into it then?

The OP has assumed, (careful), that the dealer may not have 'declared' all faults ...

If you're spending £1.5k to £2k on a car, have you looked into the running costs? A Signum will take a lot of fuel, high insurance and potentially expensive tax and repair/maintenance costs. Has your husband checked out all of these?
Also think about if something does go wrong, how easy will it be to convince this dealer that the repairs are part of whatever warranty you wrangled out of him?
Sold as seen is legitimate, but is really a trader to trader thing. Traders understand they have no comeback if anything goes wrong, and the onus is on them to check the car out. Savvy private buyers can ask for a sold as seen price, giving up their rights for a lower price, but shouldn't dare come back with problems.
I guess this car is either one that has just been traded in, that he hasn't checked and will shift quicky or he has checked it and it has loads of problems!

My husband has checked out all the running costs and they seem very similar to the Golf GTI Mk3 that we had.

We've decided to leave looking at the car this afternoon. FIL is coming around tonight to talk to us about it and MIL needs the car this afternoon now anyway (we car share with her at the moment).

I think one of the reasons that DH likes it so much is because it would be the most luxurious car that we have had and ticks all the boxes, but of course I don't want us to buy it when I have my suspicions but I'm constantly suspicious so wasn't sure if I was right to be or not.

We do have a "back up" car which is an Astra that we have seen, but we still need to check that out properly too!
