A train is a good one with jammy dodger wheels and a flake funnel. You could put little plastic farm animals on smaller cakes on the back.
I did a jungle cake for the girls 3rd party. I used flakes for tree trunks and stuck green icing fronds to make them look like palm trees. Then bought lots of jelly snakes and lizards etc and put them on. (looked better than it sounds)
This is what I'm planning this year but with pink and lilac icing.
I have learned from experience not to overdo the effort with cakes unless you're a natural which I'm not. Last year's cake nearly caused a nervous breakdown. (Mermaid islands)
At the end of the day Kyle you cannot afford to lose any more sleep so keep it simple for your own sake.
(or get your mum to make it );) :silenced:0 -

Hi Kyle
Have made a good few birthday cakes over the years - ladybirds, footballs, football pitch, snooker table, heart and flowers etc etc!!! I always used a basic sponge recipe from my trusty old Bero book! Another think I did was hire shaped baking tins from a shop not too far from here and then just iced the cake accordingly.
Don't know the last time I baked. We bought a M&S Winnie the Pooh cake for DGS2 second birthday last Monday. I had £7 worth of reward points so it hardly cost anything!
Hope things are OK with you today.

I made DGS a gingerbread cake for his 2nd birthday. I made it a chocolate cake though but it was in the shape of a gingerbread man.
It was a complete disaster.I have the pictures to prove it. But it tasted nice and he loved it. Bless him.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0 -
Hi
My advice for children's birthday cakes would be to think what your child likes currently and model it on that, buy some ready-to-roll coloured fondant icing and go from there!
Colouring your own fondant requires you to have food colouring in your cupboard which not everyone has. Also it can be messy especially if you are using liquid food colourings. It is possible to buy coloured paste which is very much easier to mix with white icing than the liquid colouring, as it doesn't alter the consistency quite so much, and gives a slightly better colour in my opinion. But if you are new to this, ready-coloured is ideal.
Always keep it simple, not a good idea to be too ambitious when you have other birthday things to plan as well.
You can see some ideas on my website. At this point I understand I have to declare an interest! I did this website as an exercise to understand the html etc. I am not selling anything and you can access my cake ideas for free. In addition, if y'all want to send me pics of your cakes, I will try to find time to start another page up to show them.

Yes, buying cakes is good too, I don't think you need to feel guilty! Or even just look at them to get good cake ideas.
I don't have a picture of the best cake I ever made. It was like a burger. A sponge sandwich put together inside out. (Two wide flat surfaces together instead of the traditional way) It was covered with pale brown fondant to look like a bun and had 'sesame seeds' made from lighter brown all over it. In the gap it had butter icing on the very inside but the bits that showed were hanging down orange pieces to look like a square of processed cheese, 'dribbles' or red fondant to look like ketchup and green crinkles to look like lettuce.
Unfortunately on the day we had a variety of cameras which all had either no battery or no film so the picture we took was taken with a poor camera and is a bit too blurry for the website.
I will have to make it again sometime.

The most impressive children's cake I made was train (as webbie said). You can use a swiss roll for the train, or make a choc sponge in a loaf tin. Second loaf tin sponge for the cab, and a third for a tender, if you like. Mini roll for the funnel, slices of choc swiss roll for the wheels, and choc fingers for the wheel connecting rods. Whole thing held together with butter cream. You could even create a face for the front (picture printed from the internet), if he likes any of the *Thomas* characters.
It looked fab, but was a nightmare to cut. I baked a choc traybake, decorated with smarties for the party bags!
