How can I avoid the installation charge?

Not true.
My exchange has been upgraded to Infinity 2 which i can ONLY get through BT. No other ISP's offer this to me currently and cannot tell me if or when they can.
I can't comment on your case other than to say it was BT Infinity which was on offer to me. I chose Plusnet's fibre optic service instead and now get speeds of between 38-40mbps. Sky have also offered this service to me. I hope you'll appreciate I'm only going on my own experience and realise that it may be different for other users elsewhere. Given my experience though it's surely worth the phone call to find out? I'm very rural btw.0 -
If other providers can only provide about 2 meg,then the is no way on this earth that Tesco can provide you 16 meg!..
Put the phone number,address or post code into the link below & it'll tell you EXACTLY the speed range you can get for each service.

The UK average is around 6-7 meg.This is mine;
I normally get around 7Mbps but for some reason it's running a little slow today...

It was a BT man who wised me up on this Spike. If your exchange has been upgraded to allow fibre optic from BT you can get the same service from some other companies. Therefore avoiding the massive BT installation charges. Even Sky can offer it to me now.
Only problem is half of my small town has got it ( the town center & exchange side) but my half hasn't.I'm waiting on O2/BE to release it here,it's only a small exchange & aside from BT/O2 & TTalk,the rest are only off net services.0 -

I'm only talking as a layman but what I have been told is that we're furthest away from our exchange and that's why I could only get 0.5mbps with ADSL. I've also been told our spur of the exchange is full and no other subscribers can be allocated. That could be a load of old cobblers but it's what I've been told so I feel fortunate to have a space on the spur and to get the speeds I do. It's certainly improved my browsing experience.
I'm about 3 miles from the nearest town or village btw.0 -

Your exchange hasn't been upgraded to Infinity, it's been upgraded to FTTC (or FTTP in some cases). Infinity is a BT Retail product based on FTTC which is available to all ISPs, it's up to them when they provide a fibre product and they can call it anything they like, BT call theirs Infinity and due to very successfull advertising have convinced many people that Fibre=Infinity=BT Retail.
