Active Phone Line?

Is there a way to test and see if there is an active phone line into a property?
I've just moved into a rented flat. Someone lived here two weeks ago, and did have a phone line that worked, and internet.
Sky came to check the phone line and install internet today, but claimed that the cable dies on entry to the property, and so the gardens will need to be dug up for the property to be connected again. I've asked the landlord, but the gardens have just been sculpted, and I really don't think she will allow this. Even if she does, its a three week wait from ordering.
There's no phone signal, and I'm paying for BT Openzone access at the moment but its expensive and very slow. I really need the internet...
Is there a way to tell if the line is in fact active, or to get the internet despite this?
Many thanks!

How much is BT Openzone?
Have you consider 3G dongle for a month?
Or if you have a spare mobile which has 3G and wifi, you can get three mobile for one month all-you-can-eat data and tethering your other device to get access to internet.
Or would your building have virgin fibre optic?0 -
To the best of my knowledge Sky do not install broadband, its a self install, how did you order it without giving them a phone number? That gum you like is coming back in style.0

They were bringing me a phone line too.
I've just heard from them on the phone - they are very confused, as it was a BT engineer and he hasn't given them a report back yet.
The woman kept telling me that the line would appear dead because Sky haven't activated it yet today, and that will happen at some point before midnight. Then she passed me to provisions who are going to try to contact BT and get back to me.
Is that true? I really want them to phone back and say it will work, but equally, he's dug a line down the middle of the garden to try and find a cable, and the landlord is going to be furious...
BT is costing me £7 a day. There's no 02 or EE signal here, but I'll try 3G as soon as Sky decide if the line is actually faulty or just deactivated.
I'm so baffled...thanks for the replies0 -

More likely that the outgoing tenant told BT they were leaving the property and the line has been disconnected from their end for that flat (so the next tenant can not use the phone line with out a contract - even if from tenant to tenant you use BT one contract must end and another be set up - this is just a case of them re connecting at their end).
Check with other tenants that they have accessible phone lines (using the same connection to the property).
I would have thought a quick call to BT to ask if the phone to the property/flat has been disconnected on exit of the last tenant and then tell sky this as they (being your future supplier) may need to be the ones to inform BT they need a connect line to your flat.Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.0 -
BT Openreach, have they completed the exchange work ? Not the same engineer that attends your property does the exchange connection in advance of your appointment in many circustances exchange work is not completed on advance & thus you will get a string of lies from Openreach.
I had 2 OR staff mess up, the exchange guy, the guy on site & a 3rd visit within 24 hours to correct both staff errors ! No wonder new install pricing is high...bunch of incompetent overpaid old men.SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe0
