I'm beginning to wonder whether it will be worth paying extra for 4G. In central London, I managed to get 7.2Mbps via Orange 3G while on a subsurface part of the Tube. And this wasn't on Virgin Media's wifi, which gave me 38Mbps while in a very deep station.
