Surely you cant blame Gordo for that? Surely that was the fault of all those private IT companies exploiting his lack of understanding of money.

It is typical of Labour's time in office though. It doesn't matter whether it was the NHS IT system, Building Schools for the Future or some other capital programme, the government went through a period where large private companies knew that the government was a good target and the coffers were awash with money.

The company I was working for at the time never previously sold to the government as their products were deemed too expensive for the public sector, but even they managed to get a reasonable foothold and several millions of turnover, and they were small beer in comparison to many.

Lots of people running round excitedly with budgets to spend and not enough project management or oversight. I don't think that's an unreasonable charge to rest at Brown's door as he did hold the purse strings and could have put stricter criteria in place for spending.

As much as I would like to say Cameron unfortunately it is difficult now because the minister who was in charge of transport at the time of the decision has now moved. But if she was still there I imagine the outcome would be the same as now.

I believe ministers have very little control over their civil servants. They cannot even sack them if they are useless.

    From the article.
But a report from the Cabinet Office's Major Projects Authority has brought the axe down on the mammoth IT project, which has been riddled by screw-ups since its launch in 2002.

In mystic_trev's defence I didn't pick that up either. It makes a lot of sense though!

No problem. I did say in my post about Browns lack of understanding of money - i thought that would have given it away

Well shortchanged, i welcome your Damascene conversion to the supporters of austerity cuts!
It's good to be against this sort of public spending on unproductive areas and activities.

the Keynesians on the forum would say that this is good spending - keeping lawyers, secertaries, paper manufactures etc in work. ;- spending is good spending in a downturn after all.

Of course some might imply that only spending on the unproductive poor will boost aggregate demand but we know that is just 'class war ' bias don't we?
