Comet extended warranies.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread.

Our F/F is coming to the end of it's 5yr warranty and we've received a letter from Comet offerring us the opportunity to extend this for £4.50 per month. Free repairs including parts and a new replacement if any future problems are terminal.

It seems too good to be true. I've had a read of the T&C's and nothing is stepping out at me.

Does anyone have experience with Comets extended warranty?

Any advice appreciated.

Since you've already paid out £270 over 5 years (probably nearly as much as the item cost in the first place), perhaps they owe you something back? Extended warranties are generally a terrible idea, especially on simple white goods like fridge/freezers that don't often go wrong.
If you must buy such warranties, then buy them direct from the provider after the manufacturer's one or two year warranty has expired, rather than paying typically 40% more via the retailer at the time of purchase-which also means that you are paying for cover that you already have included..
You are aware that companies like Comet and DSG make more margin on warranty sales than on selling the actual goods?

    Thanks for the reply.

I haven't paid out anything yet. The F/F came with a free 5 yr warranty. That runs out soon and they have offered me an extended deal for £4.50 a month.

If it hasn't gone wrong in 5 years then it's unlikely to now...

Save your money and if you can afford it put it in a "rainy day" account for when the thing requires replacement.

Quite. But you'd be prepared to pay £270 over the next five years in the unlikely event it breaks down?

How much will it have cost you if it finally breaks down in 15 years time (when they'll probably say they can't get the parts, so you'll need a new one)?

But isn't that like any insurance?

Until last August I had paid car insurance for 16+ years and never had a claim. I could have bought 3 or 4 cars with the money I've paid out. (I know it's compulsory but the principle is the same)

Thanks for all the replies. My question though was more directed at people who have experience of Comets extended warranty and whether they back up the promises they make.

But it's about risk...it is not unlikely that your car will have an accident at some point, blame or no blame. But modern white goods are extremely reliable, fridge/freezers in particular. if they're going to develop a fault, it'll usually be within the warranty period anyway.
And as I said, never buy extended warranties from the retailer, because the mark up is massive.

If you don't mind my saying so, the principle is completely different.

You insure your car because (apart from the legal aspect) you couldn't afford the horrendous cost of damages should you hit and injure someone.

And you insure your house because, if it should burn down, you wouldn't have the ready cash to buy another one.

You don't insure your fridge/freezer because, in the very unlikely event that it breaks down, you could easily afford to have it repaired or replaced (especially because you would have been saving £4.50 every month).
  • Whatever you do, don't get an extended warranty with Comet.

We've had a nightmare with them. Our £1,200 DeLonghi bean to cup coffee machine broke down after 18 months and they've now had it for nearly TWO MONTHS(!) and still no sign of us getting it back fixed.

In the meantime they expect us to sit and swivel.

Is getting to the point where we are thinking of taking them to the small claims court.

Comet extended warranty is not much more than a scam. AVOID!
