Central heating not turning off

Options
I have a bit of a problem with my central heating as it will not turn off even with it turned all the way down on the thermostat and off at the programmer.
I think it may be the 3 way valve as the lever was loose and hanging down and I have managed to keep it in the up position and it seems to have fixed the problem.
I just need to know what caused the lever to become loose and move its position.

Thanks!

  • it's the actuator which operates the microswitches in the valve.

In most wiring plans, the stat and programmer operate the valve, which operates the microswitches to call for heat from the boiler.

It's often possible to remove the actuator head and replace it without having to drain down the system or do any plumbing work.

Thanks for the replies chaps, and as for the make of valve I cannot tell you as it is facing the back wall in the cistern cupboard.
I have put a mirror behind the valve but cannot make out any brand from the very small writing.
Anyways the heating seems to be ok since I repositioned the little lever at the bottom of the valve but I would still like to know what has caused this to move which in turn stopped the heating from turning off.
Could I use a cable tie to stop the lever from moving in the future.
    Thanks Guys!

Ok it seems that the problem is still there as I have had to reset the lever to the up position yet again today........:(
It also looks like I cannot upload a picture image and include it in this post so I have PM'd southcoastrgi and included the images of the valve?

    Thanks :)

the big lever at the bottom moves to change it from heating to hot water or both, the little indicator on the side will tell you which postion the valve is in, as the valve is at least 15 years old (the warentee ran out in 1998) it is prob the motor inside this can be replaced although it can be abit fiddly, the best thing to do is to change the head (actuator) however the later makes have a push lever to allow you to remove the head however yours doesn't which will mean taking off the top to get at the screws & i'm not sure you can get a like for like replacement which would mean draining the system & changing the brass valve as well.
