Being made redundant-how do i

go about claiming for all the benefits?
My wife works 17 hours per week so i assume we will still be entitled to tax credits.
I'm just not sure who to go to first and when?
I'lll be out of work in a couple of weeks. Do i go to the job centre with my redundancy notice, then phone the tax credit place up then go to housing benefit/council tax benefit office? Or is it another way around?
How soon should i claim from. On the day i am made redundant or the following week?
Im very confused as to where to start.
Any help appreciated

  • It depends how much redundancy money you are paid.

You might find another job before the notice, redundancy and accrued holiday pay is used up. Are you looking for work? The company you work for now have to give you time off to ttend interviews.

This has just happened to us.

My OH was made redundant 7.3.07, we picked up housing benefit form same day. Also rang Jobseeker's and then they phone you back and take all the details. Jobseeker's are working very slowly for us though, its been 4 weeks now and we still haven't received any money. I work 16 hours so we rang tax credits to update them.

It's best to do things as quickly as you can because they take so long to sort out and get up and runnning.

    Good luck

You should make your claim to Jobseekers Allowance the very first day you are unemployed/made redundant, but you should find out your local number to ring in good time. The amount of redundancy money you get is irrelevant as it is NOT taken into account, only any pay in lieu of notice, or holiday pay you get. Your wife can work up to 24 hours per week, and you can still claim. When you make your claim, they should also help you claim Housing Benefit & Tax Credits.

how long were you working for the company? i just ask because i am wondering whether you will be entitled to contributions based JSA or not.have you paid NI conts for the whole of the previous 2 tax years?
if not then whilst you can claim income based JSA you might find your wife's earnings is more than your entitlement would be.
also check with local authority on claim dates for HB,alot of them only pay from the Monday AFTER a claim
    good luck

I agree with the others. Connect the job centre as soon as you can. We have only just had money after 3 weeks. This was done to a clerical arrear when we rang the details through. Once I rang them to query it they made a bacs transfer payment for the same day to us.

Redundancy is such a common thing these days, I wonder why it's so bloody stressful though. You'd think someone would have put an info pack together by now!! Having been there myself a few years go I know it's difficult.

You should have received a letter in writing by now detailing your leave date and redundancy payment figures from your company.

You need to continue looking for a new job as you may well secure one which will save you all the hassles of benefits etc which will add to your stress.

You need to contact the job centre on the first day of no work. They should be able to advise you on other benefits that you're entitled to.

    Good luck

yes, spend the day collecting all forms and go from there, your claims can take weeks to process.

Most JSA claim basic details are first taken over phone & they send you the forms.

Contact your Jobcentre & they will tell you what to do & the contact number.
Your JSA claim will start when you first phone the claim line.
    (although you receive forms afterwards).

Make your claim as soon as you are ready to claim, as you may want to have a week or two break.

The HB claim will start when you give in claim form.
So you need to get HB claim form in advance to fill in all the details, so you can give in on 1st day.

Doesn't matter which order you make JSA/HB claims, although each will ask whether you are claiming the other.
