Ditch the BT Line???

Hi, just looking for opinions really. I have a BT line with Sky providing the talk and broadband. I only receive the odd phone call on it as most people call on the mobile. Again, I don't use it really only for the very odd 0870/0845 numbers which is no more than £2 per month of calls i'd say.

I have my mobile with 'three' and I am on the one plan which gives me unlimited internet and x amount of calls/texts.

I've been using my phone for the internet connected wirelessly. All so far seems very good. Good speeds etc.

As Sky are introducing a price increase in November by £2.25 per month for their line rental, I thought about ditching it all together. I have to also pay a £2.50 per month charge as I no longer have Sky TV.

I am currently on a discount package paying £16 per month for landline & broadband. I was told that this increase will affect my discount as I am on a 50% 6 months discount. So my package will increase to £18.25 or so per month.

Half of me say's get rid of the bt line, and half says keep it. I am not really sure what to do. I know it would be 1 less bill to be paying which would help alright, but I also feel with the BT line I have the security as I have never been with-out a landline before.

The other thing is, I have debts and fear if I ditched the landline and wanted to revert back to it, I'd be refused.

Urghhhh opinions please!
Regards,

Money Saver

If you ever decide to go back to a landline, with regard to debts, I wouldn't worry about their impact on your ability to get a landline, Sky have never credit checked or reported anything re my account conduct to CRAs, so they have no idea about your credit history. This may have changed, I joined in 2005.

Last resort, BT certainly used to have a universal service obligation to provide landline services to all premises (excluding those in Hull) (it was part of the privatisation thing in 1984), if they still have to provide the landline, they will, then you can switch as necessary to whatever provider you choose. You won't need to pay for a line, as the infrastructure will still be there, to your house, it just won't be operable. They *may* disconnect it at the street cabinet, but there's so much competition now any fee would probably be waived to gain your custom.

FWIW, this is an arguement I'm having with myself right now, having received Sky's letter yesterday. It's about an 18% increase for no extra service, ridiculous! And I'm in the same boat as a lot of people, the landline is there solely for internet access.
