The thermostat has just arrived, but when I took my current one off the wall I found that it has 4 wires and not 2.. Does that mean I need an electrician to fit the new thermostat?

    Thanks

You need to search for the installation instructions for your current stat on-line, so that you know which wires you will need to connect on the new stat. One of the 'extra wires' is likely to be a neutral (not required and needs to be terminated) and the other may be an earth. Newer stats have 'volt free' contacts, which basically means that it is an isolated switch that is on when heat is required.

Thank you. These are the wiring instructions for my current programmer (I assume they also cover the thermostat) Are these sufficient to give to the electrician or do I need anything else?

That is a programmer/timeswitch. The new programmable stat. replaces the existing room stat. and the programmer/timeswitch stays where it is.

Yes, thanks but these are the only instructions I can find as I don't know the model number of the actual thermostat in the living room. I was hoping that the instructions for the programmer/timeswitch would give the information the electrician needs for the room stat? Is this not the case?

I had assumed that you were going to swap the thermostat yourself. If you can't do it yourself then any electrician will be able to fit the new programmable stat. - there are only two wires to connect!

Well, I was hoping to, but I asked my neighbour who has renovated his whole house himself and he couldn't understand how to get from 4 wires to 2 and said that I needed to get an electrician. I then saw this and couldn't understand any of it and thought it was beyond even normal electricians without wiring info:

Surely you can identify your existing room stat. make /model? Then it's simply a case of getting the installation instructions and connecting the wires to the correct terminals on the new one - there are only two plus an earth to connect.

Well, I was hoping I could, but it only says "Danfoss" on it with no model number.
