Money to defence budget, money to bankers for false promises, money towards whitewashed 'investigations', a fortune paid out to private companies not delivering, money for politician expenses with only 2 or 3 politicians scapegoated for criminal charges.

    Quite good value for £2!

I dont agree with this - you seen the Blackwall tunnel on a morning? No toll yet its backed up for miles in each direction
. Some of that is because the tunnel is 2 lanes but the approach road is 3 lanes. Some of that is because the northbound tunnel is 19th Century and larger vehicles need to cut the corners in the middle. Some of it is simply because of where it is - lots of traffic heading towards the Canary Wharf estate. Rotherhithe is less backed up because it can't take the larger vehicles.

If Dartford were free; the traffic would flow from a dual carriageway to say a 50mph limit over/under then a dual carriageway again. However, there could well be more traffic as perhaps some vans and HGVs would now take that route instead of the Woolwich ferry.

It's geography pure and simple - when there is a river (or a railway line) to cross, the crossing points become bottlenecks.
I need to think of something new here...

You should try using the Severn bridge every day - £6 to get in to Wales!

But that's free coming back again. So £6 for the return journey.
With these changes, the Dartford Crossing will be £4 for the return journey.
So not _that_ much difference, but the Severn Crossing is an awful lot longer than the Dartford Crossing.

Thank you to those posters that brought to my attention the TAG.

In all the years I have been using this tunnel I never knew anything about it.

I have just signed up and will see how it goes.

    Thanks again.

There is still a charge on Humber Bridge and that has been paid for many times over.

All in all it's just another tax.

Since the bridge isn't owned by the Government, why are they getting the blame? It belongs to a private company.
