Hi, I'm trying to find out how to secure our virgin broadband from the whole street using it! I've got a password on my router but that hasn't stopped them from using the internet.
I also can't seem to log into the router now for some reason.
If anyone could help to secure it that would be fab, thanks.
It's a Netgear router.

how do you know they are using it
login to the router, wireless settings
select WPA2-PSK
enter a Network Key (8 ~ 63 characters)
the longer the better - at least 15 characters, choose a random mixture of letters/numbers
click apply
for anyone to attach to it after that, including you, they will have to enter the network key you made up.

if you cant login to the router because you have already done this, try a wired connection!!

explain further
looping around, which router, what have you done in the settings, how are you connecting, wired or wireless, have you changed anything, can you try a different machine, have you tried powering the router on/off
there is a button to reset it to factory defaults, but that will lose all your settings.!!

i had few problems a while back, somone had logged into my netgear router and had changed some stuff, i had some great help from people on here and managed to get into my router, change the password and it was sorted, but lad across road has told me my network is open and he's using it. I cant remeber password for my router. Is there a way to secure my internet or log into my router with a new password? thanks.0

you haven't said which router it is
try
admin
password
admin
admin
virgin
password
admin
1234
if all else fails, there is a reset button.
if you don't use wireless, removing the aerial (if it has one), is pretty effective.!!

here is the support link for where to get the manual from: http://support.netgear.com/product/WGR614v9
Do you have an ethernet cable so you can connect to the router wired?
if you do I would reset the router by doing this, this will give you a blank slate to start from and erase any changes anyone has made:
then connect your computer to the router with the ethernet cable, after it is connected log in to the router (go to 192.168.1.1 in a web browser and enter either admin/password or admin/virgin)To restore the factory default configuration settings when you do not know the administration
password or IP address, you must use the restore settings button on the rear panel of the router.
1. Press and hold the restore settings button for 10 seconds.
2. Release the restore settings button, and wait for the router to reboot.
from there you can set up a WiFi passkey (page 2-5 of the manual),
select 'Wireless Settings' from the left options, of which you want to select the WPA2-PSK [AES] option. (page 2-9)
When it asks for a passkey (PSK) to use select something random not for instance an easy work (something like ehf3478ejdaf2%26eds is a good PSK) feel free to write it down you don't need to remember it.
(you may also want to change the SSID of the network on the same screen this will make it more unique and easier for you to identify, but you don't want to use something that can specifically identify you like your address or name)
After you have set that up save the settings disconnect from wired and connect with wireless entering the PSK you used above.
It is also advisable to change the admin password of the router (page 2-14 of the manual) you can write this down with the PSK and SSID of the network.0 -
