MAC codes and transferring to a new provider

I have been told once I give the MAC code to the new provider, it takes 6 to 10 working days to transfer the broadband.
but I have seen posts on here saying downtime should only be a few hours in switching providers, how does this work?

When transferring using a MAC the old ISP is terminated and the new ISP takes over. The downtime is the physical time taken by the BT Openreach engineer to transfer your line from the old ISPs connections to the new ISPs connections. This may take a few hours, though usually is much shorter than that.
Your contract with the old ISP continues until the physical transfer takes place. The 6-10 working days is how long it may take to get a BT OR appointment to do the physical work. It doesn't (or shouldn't) mean your old ISP connection stops immediately.0
