In regard to buying flea and worm stuff on the internet, lost sales on them just means that vets put up their other prices. So in the end, unless you are in the lucky position of your animal never being ill, it all evens out as to what you think you've saved, as opposed to what you actually have. (quickly- vets have worked damned hard to get where they are, want a certain level of pay, and juggle profits on different items and services to get that pay)

Advantage doesn't cover lungworm like Advocate though - it only contains one of the active ingredients. Probably better than many products out there if you're on a budget but if lungworm is a risk in the area then you would be better off with Advocate - otherwise the only other treatment is a 10 day, half-dose course of Panacur (Milbemax will reduce but not treat a lungworm infestation)
Remember that your vet is obliged to give a prescription if you want to order cheaper online, though they are allowed to charge a reasonable fee (if they put an extortionate price on a prescription you could report it to the RCVS but there is no exact guideline on fees, just that it cannot be so high it basically prevents you from asking for a prescription). Then you could order from somewhere like Animed Direct or VetUK.

Ours is labeled advantage multi and lists lungworm as covered, I just googled and advantage multi is another name for advocate. The vets at pets at home must have had a bulk buy done for them somewhere. Is it a US company?

I think Advantage and Advantage Multi are much like Frontline and Frontline Plus - the "milder" versions are OTC products but don't cover quite as much as the POM versions.

Pets at home sell a generic alternative but you still have to get it from their vets.

Pets at Home don't actually have any vets. Unless you're referring to Companion Care Veterinary Group which have some practices within or in close proximity to some Pets at Home stores. These are, however, completely separate companies.

Advantage Multi and Advocate are exactly the same product made by Bayer. It's called Advantage Multi in Canada, US and Australia and Advocate in the UK. Not unusual for products to have different brand names in different countries. Neither are generic versions.

It's an independently managed subsidiary so not a totally separate company and so Pets at home do have Vets

It was a vets in a pets at home, the packet has Advantage multi on it. I bought it in Glasgow after getting a prescription. Completely seperate companies see above.

I meant Advantage Multi, it was a typo, apologies. As I said, if it was Companion Care surgery then they're a separate company to Pets at Home. I used to work for them :)

But Companion Care Surgery is a totally owned subsidiary of Pets at Home*, so Pets at home does have Vets (I know they are a joint venture company - so in some cases the branch could be a sort of franchise).

    * So different companies in the same way as Virgin Media and Virgin Mobile are different companies.
Anyway we are getting OT here, and I don't want to come over as a pedant, hope you the OP and everyone's doggies are going to have a good day today.

  • Don't use Frontline. My friend is a Vetinary Nurse and she said that fleas have started building up a resistance to it, so it is not as effective as it used to be. Advocate is what I use on her recommendation and my dog has never had fleas or worms.

I switched from Frontline to Advantage after reading that the Frontline was no longer effective.

My dogs did nothing but scratch, although I couldn't see anything on them.

So after 3 months on Advantage I've gone back to Frontline, and peace is restored. Not a single scratch.

    I'm sticking with Frontline now.
