Hi
I'm looking for a new flea/wormer for my dog as her current stuff is being discontinued. Any recommendations for a decent dual product or even 2 separate products ( worms and fleas). Been happy with programme plus but having trouble getting the 12-22kg size.
Also what products are good for cats fleas and worms, I currently use advocate (flea and worms) but would love to find a cheaper product that does the same job. TIA x

I would say stick with advocate and use it for the dogs as well.

Pets at home sell a generic alternative but you still have to get it from their vets.

Advantage doesn't cover lungworm like Advocate though - it only contains one of the active ingredients. Probably better than many products out there if you're on a budget but if lungworm is a risk in the area then you would be better off with Advocate - otherwise the only other treatment is a 10 day, half-dose course of Panacur (Milbemax will reduce but not treat a lungworm infestation)
Remember that your vet is obliged to give a prescription if you want to order cheaper online, though they are allowed to charge a reasonable fee (if they put an extortionate price on a prescription you could report it to the RCVS but there is no exact guideline on fees, just that it cannot be so high it basically prevents you from asking for a prescription). Then you could order from somewhere like Animed Direct or VetUK.

Advocate - covers fleas, ear mites and most worms so good value for money IMO. Lulu had a nasty ear mite infestation when I adopted her (ex stray) which cleared in two days, well worth the money given the discomfort she was in, the risk of her damaging herself by scratching or ear infections.

For fleas the pipettes are easiest to apply, but my favourite is Frontline spray. It lasts 2 months, not the 1 month of pippettes. Seems very expensive to buy, but lasts for several 2 month long treatments. Disadvantage is that on long haired cats and dogs a lot of spray gets used up uneccessarily because of the length of the hair. For lice it is amazing, although it may need two applications because lice are a damn sight harder to budge than fleas. (It tends more to be stray cats that have come to us with lice, but we've had a few from houses that have come in with lice)

I personally dont trust flea powder from pet shops. Once had a little kitten come in, white as anything because he had so much flea powder on him, and the fleas were running through it quite happily. It was a good bath to get rid of the powder, and then Frontline cleared it in a few minutes.
