we are going out tonight to our local....well the pub we got to regular.... in pontardawe....allways go there as they have good live bands..

expecting company are there tonight.....

and this will be the first night out with this smoking ban in place.....they have a patio area out the back.. but its not the same.....

i dont know how i am going to cope.....as i must admit i only smoke when i'm out......

but our regular pub is lucky as they have the room to do something..... but there are some pubs that either havent got the room or the money to do something.....

this might reuin the local proper drinkers pubs as i call them.....

Doesn't seem to be so much of a problem at the moment with the fine weather we're having - I would imagine there'll be alot more disgruntled punters when it rains!!!!

    Jxx
And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

A year down the line in Scotland & it's largely fine...pubs & punters have adapted....a canopy outside the front door of some pubs helps when it's raining....otherwise it's a quick 'few drags' & back in to the dry. People & pubs will adapt pretty quickly. We've now got a mad MSP who wants to ban smoking outside pubs....which is err... hmm...everywhere else!

Wish I could get a hold of the misguided people who voted for this Scottish Parliament & shake them by the neck....were a first rate people governed by third rate politicians.

Well, speaking personally, and I'll probably get a lot of stick for this, but this ban is a, pardon the pun, a breath of fresh air! Should have been done years ago, and judging by the amount of ciggie butts on the floor, the next stage should be banning smoking in the street. All very well for smokers to "nip out for a drag" in the pub, but when they come back, they stink!

I really feel for smokers. Until about 10 months ago I smoked, and couldn't even have imagined going to pub and not being able to smoke. When I stopped I had the same feeling, but it was my choice to stop smoking - it wasn't being imposed upon me. A lot of my friends smoke, and I guess it's going to be odd going out with them when the weather is miserable as they'll have to keep popping out and missing the conversation.

I must add though, that I don't miss the ciggies. When I went out a couple of weeks ago, I didn't even notice the pub was non-smoking (the ban hadn't started) until I could smell smoke in the loo.

well.....the land lady of the pink geranium has done her customers who smoke very proud......

she has done the back of the pub... well what i can only say as a garden room with sliding walls lol......

she has also a an all weather tv worth 6k coming so the people that go there during the day can watch the horse racing.. football......rugby..... etc.....

the best way od discribing it ..the way that its been done its like being in spain......it is brill... ok it was a little bit chilly... later on in the night...... but the heaters that are attached to the roof of the structure... were not wired up yet.....

i did notice i didnt drink as much...... as where i would normally drink...smoke and chat....... when we went outside for a quick smoke..... you would chat out there.... and the drink was inside.....( to save our places lol)

the landlady also mentioned that there will be cameras pointing at the band/live music so can be shown on the tv outside.... which is just the otherside of the wall so you can hear the band anyway....

i think with what i have heard..with what the other pubs have done in the area.... i think she will gain more customers......as there has been no expense spared.....

the talk was..o9n friday and sat night in the pub.. that the pub should ave had the option to be a non smoking or a smoking pub......or be allowed to have a smoking room....

i should imagine there will be a few pubs going to the wall becuase of this..... as the breweries are doing alternative arrangements for the larger more profitable pubs first....

Wow CTC! I may start drinking in ponty! that sounds fantastic!
Swansea was well weird to say the least.. The little pubs were really dead, it was well weird, and one of the pubs we go to which doesnt have a beer garden had us, and no one else in it... Wind st was packed, as usual, and i found it a bit frightening having to go outside on my own to smoke.. I dont think they took into account how dangerous it can be for a woman to have to go and stand outside on her own in the dark... I honestly think pubs should have been given the choice as to what they wanted to do, it seems unfair to me to have a blanket ban when a lot of people didnt want it...

The ban has been going well in Scotland, haven't really heard much bad press about it. Have heard moans from people saying that they will need to close but haven't heard of any mass closures. You have also pointed out that one of your pubs have taken the initiative and done something really positive to try and keep punters coming and also encourage new ones. If pubs aren't prepared to do something to keep existing customers or bring in new customers then it's their own fault. They may have some limitations with outdoor space, but they can do other things to try and keep punters happy.

We also had people mention the same things as you - why not have smoking and non smoking pubs, or have smoking rooms etc.

The simple answer is that many smokers wouldn't go to non smoking pubs even if some of their mates were non smokers. With a smoking room, it would be expected for non smokers to go there too.

Once you have got used to it, you will probably find that you cut down on the amount you smoke because you can't just sit inside and chain smoke like what many people seem to do when drinking.
