What to do for a whole month.....

Hi everyone,

A quick background:

I left my old job to start a new one when the new employer informed me that the role had been frozen. Old job couldn’t take me back (though they wanted to) as they have already filled my role and were training up my replacement. Suddenly I was unexpectedly unemployed.

I have been job seeking for 2 months. However now have been offered a fantastic job. All the paperwork has arrived, background checks done and I am good to go. But the commencement email advises that my start date is beginning of next month (there are a few new starters so I will assume they have notice period to work.

As I am not job seeking I believe that I will come off JSA this morning, when I call them, leaving us brassic. Esp. as I won’t get paid for a month after I start. Now looking for temp work to cover the gap but the agencies I have contacted want long term temps not a short stint but I will keep my fingers crossed.

The actual question:

So for all intents and purposes I have a month to kill, but with absolutely no money. What would you do with yourself? We don’t have children so the whole day is uninterrupted. As I have already been at home Job seeking for two months the house is immaculate – flylady and detail cleaning done intensively for 2 months. I am an avid reader and would normally languish with a book but as I have been reading between job seeking and cleaning (both are good way to keep on top of incoming recruitment emails and websites but also take a break away from the PC/phone) I have kind of read myself out.

So if you had this lovely time to spend what would you do (remembering it’s all got to be NSD)

I look forward to your replies, silly as well as serious.

:D

    Sewing/ quilting? Crafting? Walking?
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Actually I do think you can be classed as seeking work - worth pursuing. Brave the benefit board and ask the question or when you ring in?

    Morning Molly,

Thank you very much for the reply. I do have a sewing machine and some old shirts of the OHs however i have very few crafting tools. But i will look into learning quilting.

I do like a good walk and normaly drag my elderly neighbours very reluctant overweight hound out with me. However the weather is dire for most of this week. I will keep an eye out for breaks in the weather and chase down the mutt as soon as the rain lets up

(He sees me come up the drive and goes and hides as he would much rather stay in front of the fire being pampered and waited on paw and paunch) Saying that once he is resigned to being out he enjoys it :rotfl:

  • I wouldn't come off JSA until the day I started a new job to be honest. The same thing might happen in the meantime.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

    Hi there Dollypop,

    Thank you for the congratulations.

*shudders* Already thinking of Christmas? really? :D

As there is only two of us and we both work essential services (and dont have children or want to party) we tend to get the shifts over christmas/new year. (we dont mind at all)

So we have a really pared down christmas and save the annual leave for going away in the year (Normaly but with the gap in emplyment this wont be happening this coming year)

So its getting the tree down from the loft, ordering the beef and bobs your uncle, Christmas is sorted :rotfl:

    Morning Sambucus Nigra,

But i will not be seeking a role, is that not fraud?

I am seeking temp work as a stop gap, does that count?

I will discuss with the JC when i call them this morning the extra £60 is very welcome to keeping our heads above water as our three months bills buffer is nearly dry.

I would still be applying for jobs as per my agreement, if it were me.

You've already been stung by one new job; and you have no spare cash.

    You do the maths.

Yes keep signing on, you can tell your advisor you have a job and the start date and that you will still be looking for a job in the interim.

    Thank you JC9297,

I will look to do that after chatting to the JC today.
