2 Year stamp duty holiday called for - Balls

Balls is no doubt trying to capitalise on the rumour that stamp duty on high value properties will be increased as a quid pro quo for the LibDems supporting more welfare cuts. Labour probably would like to see more tax put on expensive properties, but hey let's not let integrity get in the way of scoring a political point.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.
The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

The only way for this to be disproved is for labour to win the next election and fail dismally.
But that was what was proved last time, which is why they're not in now. But the British electorate has an extremely short memory and is always seduced by the promise of an easy way out.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

Why limit it to £250k?
Most 1st time buyers in London are spending more than that.0 -
I am now retired and all my working life I have struggled to make ends-meet especially when the Tories are in power it has never failed. So you can see that I am on the side of common sense.
If Stamp Duty was put on hold for two years our property market would reward the Government with a greater revenue than they are getting at present. More jobs would be created and we would get back on our feet.
Before you shoot me down in flames, this is only my opinion and granted you are entitled to yours.

The counter argument, put up by Cable on TV this morning, is that with so much tax evasion afoot, because property cannot be up-sticked and moved to Monaco or Liechtenstein taxing it is a good way of getting more tax out of the well off. But they're probably thinking about Council Tax more than stamp duty -- or maybe both.No-one would remember the Good Samaritan if he'd only had good intentions. He had money as well.

The statistics, from previous stamp duty holidays show no measurable differences in all of those things.0 -

Maybe the period was not long enough to make any reasonable difference. I think that if it covered a period of 5 years it would have certainly been very welcome.
Statistics as we all know can be very misleading as the Economists of our country will admit to.

Is that for the builders and sellers? It won't benefit the buyers as people will just put the prices up.
I like stamp duty and as a FTB I would prefer higher interest rates than stamp duty holiday to get the market going.:exclamatiScams - Shared Equity, Shared Ownership, Newbuy, Firstbuy and Help to Buy.

Don't you think a better use of taxpayer money would be to actually build houses in places that people want to buy them, at a cost that people want to buy them?0 -

I could not agree more with you more, we need better economists comments and advice to be listened to rather that the present attitudes that we hear.
