Hi there, my car has 6 previous owners and 88,000 miles on the clock, don't think the car has had a full service history before.
The car is running fine, but I'm have a small issue with the fuel gauge. I filled up £5.00 and this usually goes up to one bar and I can get around 30 - 40 miles out of this. However, there seems to be an error with the fuel gauge as It went from ONE full bar after filling up 5.00 to back on the red line after 10 miles driving. This isn't right...
I did have a small issue before but seemed to have gone away....I could smell a mild burning smell whilst driving. Haven't smelled it for 2 - 3 weeks now.
I'm thinking of going to one of my local garages who will change £70 for a full service history but I don't think they'll do a full proper service history so I am thinking of going to kwik fit for my full service history.
I am wondering, should I stay away from kwik fit for my service history as they seem expensive? I think it's £125.00 for a full service H on my fiat punto 1.2L 2002.
thanks

How can an 8 year old car get a full service history with one service?
A service won't fix a problem with a fuel guage either.0 -

Sorry, please bare with me. I'm 18 with very little knowlege with cars!
can you break it down by what you mean by this?
How can an 8 year old car get a full service history with one service?
also..

Doesn't a full service history includes going over a car with a fine comb which will find any issues along with the issues with the fuel guage too?0 -
1) A full service history means having a record of all services done since the car was new, done in accordance to the manufacturer's guidance on servicing.
2) What is done in a service is set out in the service book or manual that would come with the car.
As far as the gauge goes, could it just be within a margin of error - maybe your car was lower than originally indicated? I would think to see how far your get on a tank full before considering reporting this as an issue to the garage.0 -
Your doing yourself no favours putting £5 in at a time as your petrol pump will be lifting any dirt, sediment etc from the bottom of the tank so dont be surprised if you have poor running, misfires etc.0

It didn't came with the car because of this. Is there no point/Or I can't get a full service history done?
I'm thinking of just fulling up on a full tank and get some fuel system cleaner to clean out and crap that's in the car and see where that takes me with the fuel gauge.0 -
£5.00 for petrol in a car these days will be lucky to move the guage. Your car will use around 15p petrol per mile depending on your driving style.
I put more in a can for my lawnmower.0 -

It won't. All fuel comes from the bottom of the tank!
However, why the hell would you bother putting in a fiver at a time? If you see a cheap garage, I'd be banging a lot more in. Generally it goes up faster than it comes down and you are only going to put the money in the tank anyway.
Mind, I say that as someone who put £80 in yesterday as it was 135.9 and I don't think I'll be getting it for any less round here!
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Your £125 will be an oil change and a check of the brakes and tyres for parts that may need replacing in the next few years.
You will get a nice receipt to say your wreck of a motor needs these parts urgently. If you dont get them done now you must sign a disclaimer to say they told you and not sue them if your car explodes and kills you.
It wont fix other faults.
Fuel gauges vary with the gradient of the road. Park on a steep hill it mak go up or down depending where the float is.
Stick £40 or £50 of fuel in and when it reaches 1/4 go and refill it.

There is nothing wrong with getting your car serviced now. Depending on what it has had done before it may need other things doing. It may need things like the cam belt changing and if so will be closer to £500 than £100. If the cam belt does need changing then get it dome because if it breaks it kills your engine.
Check what is being done in the "full service" It may vary from garage to garage for what it includes.
As said below the £5 you put in will not read correctly on your gauge, you need to put more in. Not necessarily fill it but put at least half in if you cannot afford to fill it.0 -
putting £5 in a punto is madness its a plastic fuel pump so they burn out due to non cooling by being in cool fuel
a punto needs an oil and filter ever year so get that done
plugs last 60,000 miles0
