To be completely honest or not?

I am planning to list a fridge freezer on ebay a little later, and wanted opinions please.

It is in excellent condition, needs a clean inside but I can do that no problem.

Only thing is, the glass shelves fit into the fridge, and they also have small plastic bits to hold them about halfway back - I assume just for extra stability. One of these has been lost (Dropped it on seller's grass when I bought it last year, he found it and said he would send but I never received it) but has not affected the shelf in any way.

Should I mention this missing piece in the ebay listing, or wait til it is collected, or not mention it at all? A family member and I are disagreeing on this so I thought I would ask. I think I should put it into the listing itself, they think I should wait until it is collected.

I don't want to jeopardise my chances of it selling, but I also don't want to mislead someone and get negative feedback.

You put all the information you have on the listing, otherwise you'll get problems.

  • In my opinion, if someone wants a second hand fridge they just want something that's clean and works for a cheap price.

I doubt anyone would even notice and even if they did, little things like that are to be expected, it's not like it makes a difference in normal use.

I would agree if this was going on Gumtree or local free ads however the Op
has said it is going on eBay. Therefore there mustn't be anything at all that buyer could object to as assuming collection only it is already hard enough to be protected without potentially giving the buyer anything to moan about.

Not only that, the more information you give the more chance you have of a sale. The more honest the buyer thinks you are the more likely they are to want to deal with you. If the fault's a minor one it won't make a difference to the price and will give the buyer realistic expectations.

That's the risk you take selling on ebay. I sold a faulty Xbox 360 and the buyer opened a dispute because it didn't work and guess what? They went in his favour!!:rotfl:

Anyway yeah, you could also get someone win the auction, pick up the fridge, transport it upside down then switch it on right away at the other end causing damage. Or they could drop it at the other end and damage the compressor. Either way they could say the item does not work and open a dispute.

Best thing to do is to have it running when the buyer arrives and ask them if they are happy with it inside and out.

Minimise your risks and don't mislead, that way you don't lose disputes. Dishonesty occasionally prospers but most of the time you end up being a loser as you found out the hard way.

  • Thank you all for your advice. Also just remembered there are some scratches to one side (against a wall so i don't see them!) so have made sure to put this in the listing too. Fingers crossed it goes so we don't have to move it in 3 weeks time!

List everything in the listing and photograph it all. You will minimise any come back on you if you do, and people can make a proper informed choice to buy or not. :)

I don't think you read my post properly, it was listed as faulty/spares or repairs.
  • i know the plastic bits u mean my dad has them on his, dont no wot they do my guess to stop kids acc tipping glass shelf onto floor. they can prob get replacement but let them no, if fridge is working the plastic thing is a bit irrelevant as for scratches take photos their fault then
