Lamb and pork seem particularly expensive at present. Even so called cheap cuts of lamb like neck fillet/stewing steak. So when the other light I saw the size of pork/lamb Nigella was cooking it must have cost a fortune...:eek:or perhaps she knows all the right places to buy from...

Maybe she can afford it as a millionairess in her own right who is married to a billionaire :(

That's more likely the reason...both pieces of meat were when laid falt approx what appeared to be at least 18inches square. And quite thick in diameter too.

Andrew Lawrence(Comedian)is on Radio 4 at present and his topic tonight is about food(should be available on the internet soon)quite a lot of what he is saying is true...

They may not like it in media land but it is time for a tv series that is more telling you how to live more frugally and also showing more simplistic and economic recipes not necessarily the kind that many cooks on tv do...

They can still have those as well but we should have at least one programme for those who cannot access the internet/afford to buy cook books and it would also show that cooking is not as difficult as some seem to think it is...

It is easy for the rich to make money, but not for anyone else. Environmental subsidies (HLS etc) are intended to make up for the money that the farm loses by not being intensive. And anyone who is involved in the sector will know about the minefield of paperwork, penalties, hoops to jump through and so on.

There is a tragedy going on out there - farmers may be three times more likely to commit suicide than the general population.

    Food for thought.

Nearly 30 years ago:eek:Judi Spiers did an afternoon programme on BBC1 that was similar to what I suggest and back then because the internet was not around you sent in for a kind of free sheet full of the tips featured in the programme...

I have just spent :eek:almost £5 in the supermarket which I did not plan for:mad:the good news, I hit the time when some yellow stickered items had been put out as I was about to leave empty handed...when quality ham on the bone was put out from the Deli...I could have bought more but when there is only you...the bargain then is no longer one...so I got £7.12 value for £1.78.

Then I happened down another aisle where they were reducing some items to placed in the YS area...I got 3x380g trays of diced pork(each worth £4)each cost me £1, so for £4.78 I now have £19.78 worth of meat. I am determined to squeeze it into the freezer. I'm not sure how but...

Being single and padding meals out I think I can do quite a lot with that amount of pork...:)and ham sandwiches, ham salad and possibly a meal with potatoes, veg and possibly gravy over the next few days...

I also found some vegetables(near their used by date)but again roughly for £1 but saved around £5.

Originally there was nothing worth buying but whilst I was there the ham was put out and I saw them checking the meat area and waiting and timed it as they put the reduced priced pork out!

So for £4.78 I have almost £20's worth of meat!

Have a search for wholesale butchers who travel to local markets as well as having a shop, like this one http://www.waynewalker.co.uk/aboutus.htm which covers the north west and surrounding areas.

I have never used them as I can never remember how much I would pay in Tesco, I am going to make a note of their prices and compare them to the wholesale butcher. Plus I used to buy a lot of reduced meat from the supermarkets late at night and freeze it, never any left now as more people have the same idea.

No, I don't have anything to do with the company, just hear about it a lot on the radio.

    ;)

She's loaded and money is no object
  • Dont get me wrong I love Ms Lawson but even some of her recipies are expensive to make and the same goes for Nigel slater. Both fab cooks, but still cater for yuppies. I like to watch them for a bit of escapeism.
Mind you speaking of prices rising I went to buy my kids value snacks out of Morrisons earlier, they have risen from 59p to 82p!!! I wouldnt mind if it was a couple pence, but that is ridicious! I am going to have to shop around yet again!!
Has anyone seen my last marble:A:A:A:A
