    CTC,
I have suggested more of these should be started in towns...there are a few coop's but the best are miles away and the nearest are approx 5 miles away so adding on bus fares...

I may put my thinking cap on and see if an article could be printed in the freesheet and see if anyone responds either to offer transport or start something here...

You'd think that there would be demand for something like that or there will be soon sadly, wish we had a farm shop locally offering meat too...

I found some better quality potatoes on offer in Tesco's tonight suitable for boiling or baking 1.5kg for £1. Though I am having a value meal a 400g shepherd's pie for £1...

Tesco's must be worried about Aldi's coming because they have now really increaseded the floor space given over to meat products...and are selling items they have never ever had before like lamb neck fillets.

But the cheapest were £3.58 for two. I could get 4 meals out them but they were not much cheaper than buying chops or diced lamb...even though they had been reduced by approx £1.30 on their normal price...

    I've been Money Tipped!
can confirm, the price of a sack of spuds £9.50:eek::eek:

this is from the local fruit and veg wholesaler, they are scottish spuds.

there still might be the odd seller selling them cheaper, maybe direct from the farmer etc, but dont hold your breath.

this works out at 38p a kg

wonder how long it will take before the price hikes are truely in the supermarkets..

But for me I think it is now time to really support the producers, by trying to buy direct, or even local independant wholesalers/shops etc.. I know this might sound barmy in a time of major price hikes, BUT....There is sense in this, as I feel if you spend your money in local shops etc, then that money stays ( hopefully) within the community.. not stashed away in some offshore account to avoid paying british taxes:mad::mad::mad:

Just like to say that while many, many uk producers are honest, upstanding tax payers, I use an agricultural accountant and feel obliged to say we are aware there are more ways to tax avoid (legally not necessary morally) for farmers than there are for PAYE workers ime.

Buying British and supporting local industry can only be good for those of us who can afford it, but don't get too sidetracked with the idea that the poor looking farmer pays as much tax as those among us who are employed rather than self employed or business owners, because while it Certainly might be the case, it isn't necessarily so.

my local `posh` gentleman farmer only does wheat grain for animal feed, year upon year. Now and then he hires contractors and they whizz up and down in their big tractors and combines. I found out that he gets £33,000 a year in subsidy. That plus what he gets for the grain and for the puny field margins. He is, I believe honest and upstanding and I suppose only collects what the gov throws at him. It is/was an eye opener.
